Shinobi: Art of Vengeance – Sega’s Legendary Composer Returns to Voice Joe Musashi on Nintendo Switch

Sega has reignited a classic franchise with the recent launch of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, now available on modern platforms including the Nintendo Switch via the eShop.

Developed in collaboration with acclaimed French studio Lizardcube, the latest installment in the long-running Shinobi series brings the legendary ninja, Joe Musashi, back into the spotlight with a fresh take on 2D action platforming. The Shinobi series—first introduced by Sega in arcades in 1987—has maintained a dedicated fanbase for decades, renowned for its challenging gameplay and iconic characters.

With Art of Vengeance, Sega and Lizardcube have modernized the gameplay and visuals, creating an accessible yet authentic experience for both long-time fans and new players alike.

The collaboration with Lizardcube, previously known for their work on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, has been met with praise for its respect for the source material and stylish presentation. While Joe Musashi, the franchise’s central protagonist, remains largely silent throughout the new adventure—with only the occasional grunt or sound—the question of his voice actor was quickly addressed within the fan community.

Instead of selecting a newcomer or an in-house staffer, Sega enlisted the talents of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi—an industry legend known for his vocal and compositional work on classic Sega titles such as Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2, Shenmue, Sega Rally Championship, and even contributions to Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate and the recent Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Mitsuyoshi’s unique voice and musical prowess have been celebrated by Sega enthusiasts for decades, particularly his unforgettable performances on tracks like "Let’s Go Away" for Daytona USA’s soundtrack.

His return in Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, voicing not only Joe Musashi but also the character Yamoto, further cements Sega’s commitment to honoring the company’s rich legacy while pushing the series forward. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance stands as an impressive update to one of Sega’s most iconic properties, seamlessly blending nostalgic elements with modern design.
