ININ, the publisher behind numerous ports and physical re-releases, has confirmed a delay for Shenmue III on Nintendo Switch 2.

The port was originally scheduled for late 2026 but will now arrive in early 2027, the company said in an official press release.

ININ emphasized that the slip is intended to ensure the title ships in a polished state rather than being released prematurely.

Shenmue and Shenmue II hold a notable place in console history.

Developed by Yu Suzuki and SEGA AM2, the original Shenmue launched on Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and established several open-world conventions, including a detailed recreation of 1986 Yokosuka, NPCs with daily schedules, in-game arcades featuring classic Sega titles, and the use of quick time events.

Shenmue II followed in 2002.

After a long gap, Shenmue III was developed by Ys Net, funded in part via a high-profile 2015 Kickstarter campaign, and released in November 2019 for PlayStation 4 and PC, the latter available at launch through the Epic Games Store.

Reception to Shenmue III was mixed, with critics and players noting its faithfulness to the original formula while also debating how much the design should have been modernized.

The PC Epic Games Store exclusivity at launch was a particular point of contention within the community.

ININ said it understands fans are eager to see the protagonist Ryo Hazuki presented on Nintendo's next-generation hardware, and that it is taking time to deliver the best possible version for the platform.

The company outlined specific gameplay options planned for the Switch 2 port, including adjustments to the stamina system, the ability to skip cutscenes that were previously unskippable, and configurable options that allow players to retain the original experience if they prefer.

These changes were highlighted as optional toggles rather than mandatory alterations.

This announcement arrives as Nintendo Switch 2 continues to attract third-party support.

ININ did not provide a precise release date beyond the early 2027 window; the company reiterated it will publish a firm date when development milestones are met.

For now, players and retailers should expect Shenmue III for Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in early 2027, per the publisher's statement.
