Sega president Shuji Utsumi has outlined the company's approach to physical and digital distribution, telling Japanese publication Famitsu that Sega views a move toward digital as "crucial" while still valuing physical media.

The comments come amid wider industry conversations about disc production and digital-first strategies, including Sony's public confirmation that it will stop manufacturing PS5 discs from January 2028.

In the Famitsu interview, Utsumi framed the shift as a response to changing player habits.

He said Sega sees the proportion of players on PC steadily increasing and that the company needs to strengthen its digital efforts to cultivate that market.

Utsumi noted that Sega has historically tended to approach releases from a physical-media perspective, and that a conscious change in mindset is required to operate more globally and digitally.

Paraphrasing his remarks: Utsumi explained Sega believes digital distribution is essential for "full game" releases on consoles and PC, and that the company must balance respect for physical media culture with an active push into digital channels.

He emphasized Sega's roots as a platform provider and said the company intends to pursue digital and physical strategies in parallel rather than eliminating cartridges, discs, or boxed products outright.

The interview did not provide a detailed timetable or a platform-by-platform distribution plan; instead, it emphasized principle and direction.

Sega's acknowledgement of digital growth aligns with broader trends in the industry, including platform holders and publishers reassessing physical production in response to manufacturing decisions and changing consumer preference.

For developers and industry observers, Utsumi's comments confirm Sega is preparing operationally and strategically for a larger digital footprint on PC and console storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop, while still recognizing the enduring role of physical products.

How that balance will manifest across platforms — from Nintendo Switch cartridges to disc and digital options on PlayStation and Xbox hardware — will depend on future release strategies and platform-holder policies.

Sega's public stance, as relayed by its president in Famitsu, positions the company to continue offering physical releases where appropriate while accelerating investment in digital distribution to reach growing PC and global audiences.
