SEGA and Sonic Team describe the release as a single-package update for Nintendo Switch 2 that "delivers improved graphics and performance across the Starfall Islands while including all previously released content in one edition." The Definitive Edition specifically bundles the 'The Final Horizon' story campaign, the 'Sonic's Birthday Bash' content update, a digital art book and the soundtrack alongside other post-launch material that had been sold separately.
A retail version is available as well, but it is distributed as a Game-Key Card.
That means the cartridge-equivalent contains a download key rather than full game data on the card, and purchasers should expect to download the game's files to their Switch 2.
To our knowledge, SEGA has not provided an upgrade path for owners of the Nintendo Switch version, meaning existing Switch owners will not automatically receive a Switch 2 upgrade or free Definitive Edition conversion.
