Metal Gear Online is a competitive third-person shooter that first appeared as part of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on PlayStation 2 and later in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops on PSP, before being revived as a standalone multiplayer mode for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on PlayStation 3.
Official servers for the Metal Gear Online services were shut down over time, with the Metal Gear Solid 4 servers taken offline in 2012.
Since then, the SaveMGO community has worked to restore online functionality via reverse-engineered servers to preserve the multiplayer experience.
Members of SaveMGO reported the discovery after inspecting the Master Collection Volume 2 executable.
SaveMGO contributor Marko, who posts under the handle KDE Wayland 69 Enjoyer, told followers on X that strings in the MC2 executable explicitly reference SaveMGO.
In his public reaction, he said that finding the references felt like official recognition of the preservation effort and that he was proud of the project’s role in maintaining access to the multiplayer content over the years.
The Master Collection Volume 2 rerelease of Metal Gear Solid 4 does not include an official Metal Gear Online mode, but the presence of SaveMGO-related strings in the executable has been confirmed by community members who examined the build.
Konami has not issued a public comment regarding the reference or the role, if any, SaveMGO played in making DLC or online-related assets accessible for the rerelease.
