Description

Nintendo has officially joined forces with Samsung to produce the main processor powering the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, building on long-standing supplier relationships and underlining its strategy to strengthen console production for global demand. Bloomberg recently reported that this partnership could position the Nintendo Switch 2 to achieve an ambitious sales target of 20 million units by March 31, 2026, surpassing Nintendo's own forecast of 15 million units for the financial year.

This surge in production capacity is seen as a pivotal move for Nintendo as it prepares to launch the successor to its blockbuster Nintendo Switch. The collaboration marks a significant victory for Samsung Electronics, which has sought to bolster its standing in the contract chip manufacturing sector, a space historically dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

According to Bloomberg’s report, Samsung's role involves manufacturing a custom processor developed by Nvidia specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The processor will be fabricated using Samsung’s advanced 8-nanometer process node, enabling an efficient ramp-up in production volume.

This manufacturing capacity is expected to ensure that Nintendo can swiftly meet consumer demand at launch and adjust to market trends as necessary. Samsung’s longstanding relationship with Nintendo is a factor in this decision.

The South Korean tech giant has previously supplied essential components such as NAND flash memory and OLED screens for previous models in the Nintendo Switch family.

This expertise and established support network have contributed to Samsung’s selection for handling the complex Nvidia-designed chipset for the Switch 2. In response to inquiries about the partnership, Nintendo issued a statement clarifying its position on supplier relationships.

The company reiterated that it does not disclose specific supplier arrangements and would not provide additional information regarding Switch 2 production details beyond prior statements from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa.

Both Nvidia and Samsung have declined to comment on the reported deal. Nintendo’s ability to leverage manufacturing partnerships and advanced semiconductor fabrication is central to its strategy for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Should production need to scale further for a global launch, the company may rely on contract assemblers like Foxconn Technology Group to handle increased output, ensuring that demand is met as the new console enters the market. As the gaming world awaits further announcements, Nintendo’s partnership with Samsung signals its commitment to robust, future-proof console production, setting the stage for another generation of industry-leading hardware.
