LEVEL-5 has confirmed that storied composer Joe Hisaishi wrote the main theme for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, the studio’s upcoming puzzle-adventure scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
The announcement places one of Japan’s most celebrated film composers at the heart of a major franchise return: the title will ship worldwide at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop on 10 December 2026.
Hisaishi, widely known for his long association with director Hayao Miyazaki and many Studio Ghibli films, composed the main melody while Japanese singer-songwriter Lilas Ikuta provided the lyrics and performs the recorded theme.
LEVEL-5 formalized the collaboration as part of its promotional rollout for the game.
Ikuta described the collaboration as a profound honour and said she approached the work with intense care.
She explained that meeting Hisaishi made her nervous, and that she carefully imagined the emotions behind his composition while writing lyrics.
Her goal, she said, was to choose words that would let the melody breathe and to create a theme whose message resonates beyond the game’s story.
Set a year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam moves the series to Steam Bison in America, where advanced steam-engine technology has created a society surpassing even London’s earlier innovations.
The game follows Luke Triton—voiced by Mio Imada—who has relocated to the United States and works as Detective Luke solving everyday mysteries.
When a deeply puzzling incident arises, Luke contacts Professor Layton—voiced by Yo Oizumi—for help.
LEVEL-5 also addressed puzzle design for the new title.
With longtime series puzzle creator Akira Tago having passed away, QuizKnock—a group known for creating quizzes and riddles across Japanese media—has handled puzzle creation for this entry.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam marks a notable franchise return following Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and the later Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
