Square Enix Hints at Future for Final Fantasy XVI on Nintendo Switch 2
Square Enix continues to be at the forefront of role-playing game (RPG) innovation, and recent remarks from key developers have further ignited anticipation around the possibility of Final Fantasy XVI making its way to the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console.
The Final Fantasy franchise, among the most successful and enduring JRPG series, has seen enormous success across platforms including PlayStation 5, PC, and, more recently, the Xbox Series X|S.
During a recent live stream event, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida (widely known as Yoshi-P) and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro addressed questions about the game’s future.
While discussing past and present platforms, Yoshida remarked that Nintendo remains the primary platform yet to receive the latest installment in the series.
While no official announcement has been made, this comment has energized fans and analysts across social media, with some interpreting the statement as a potential signpost for future plans involving the Nintendo Switch 2.
Currently, Square Enix’s focus centers on preparing Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for release on the Nintendo Switch 2.
This highly acclaimed remake, which was initially exclusive to PlayStation platforms, is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo’s next-generation system in Winter 2024.
In addition, the tactical RPG Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is confirmed for a September 2024 release on Switch 2, providing fans with robust strategy gameplay and a return to the celebrated Ivalice universe.
Final Fantasy XVI itself debuted on PlayStation 5 in June 2023 and broadened to PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2024.
Despite high critical acclaim for its narrative and visuals, the Xbox port saw a relatively slow start in sales, according to data shared by industry outlets such as Pure Xbox.
The evolving platform strategy from Square Enix reflects their commitment to bringing blockbuster titles to a wider global audience.
Notably, this is not the first time Square Enix leadership has referenced the possibility of mainline Final Fantasy games on Nintendo consoles.
In earlier statements, Naoki Yoshida also voiced interest in exploring a Nintendo release for the enduring MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online, though no concrete details or announcements have followed.
Despite mounting enthusiasm, Square Enix has not officially confirmed Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy XIV Online for the Nintendo Switch 2.
For now, fans can look forward to definitive ports like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles coming soon to the upcoming Nintendo hardware, further cementing the fruitful relationship between Square Enix and Nintendo.
Stay tuned to future Nintendo Directs and official Square Enix channels for updates on potential titles and official release information for Final Fantasy games on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
