Description

Nintendo’s innovative approach to consumer hardware has once again captured attention, this time with the release of the Alarmo sound clock—an unconventional device from the Japanese company best known for the Nintendo Switch.

While recent headlines have focused on Nintendo’s new music app for smartphones, Alarmo has recently become the stage for an unexpected technical breakthrough: the classic first-person shooter Doom is now fully playable on the device, thanks to a dedicated homebrew community. The achievement comes from GaryOderNichts, a developer with a history of reverse engineering Nintendo platforms such as the Wii U, in collaboration with fellow coder Spinda.

Together, they successfully ran custom code on Alarmo, quickly attracting requests to port id Software’s Doom, a tradition in tech circles and among homebrew enthusiasts.

Their project represents a significant milestone, as it demonstrates the flexibility of the Alarmo hardware, originally designed as a simple sound clock, and its capability to run legacy games. Notably, the buttons and rotary knob designed for Alarmo's original alarm and time-setting functions are repurposed for in-game controls, allowing users to play Doom directly on the device.

In a video widely circulated on social media, viewers can see the game running fluidly, with gameplay managed solely through Alarmo’s modest interface. In a technical update, GaryOderNichts explained the current limitations of the project.

"At present, there is no audio support because of USB loader memory size restrictions," he reported.

"The .wad file for Doom must be compressed and then decompressed to external memory during startup.

However, it's feasible to run the shareware version of Doom directly from a USB drive, leaving the Alarmo firmware untouched." This approach not only preserves the integrity of the original clock but also broadens access for technically-inclined users interested in experimenting with the platform. For enthusiasts eager to try Doom on the Alarmo sound clock themselves, the developers have made the source code and comprehensive instructions publicly available.

Additionally, a detailed blog post explains the technical process, offering further insight into the methods used to adapt and run the iconic shooter on such unorthodox hardware. This achievement highlights both the enduring popularity of Doom within the development community and the ongoing creativity inspired by Nintendo’s hardware.

While the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Direct announcements usually spotlight blockbuster releases for the Nintendo Switch, projects like this underline the company’s influence far beyond its mainstream products.

As developers continue to explore the boundaries of what Nintendo’s platforms can achieve, the Alarmo sound clock’s unlikely transformation into a Doom-playing device stands as a testament to the power of ingenuity and community-driven innovation.
