Super Mario 64 Typo Bug Discovered in Nintendo Switch Online N64 Expansion Pack
The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack continues to expand its catalog of classic games, offering subscribers access to an ever-growing library of Nintendo 64 titles.
While the service delivers nostalgia and accessibility to beloved games, it's also introduced some unexpected quirks—including a recently discovered bug in Super Mario 64 that has sparked interest among the gaming community.
Super Mario 64, a flagship title originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996 and now available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, has long been celebrated for its pioneering 3D platforming gameplay.
However, a new report indicates that the European version of the game on Switch is affected by a display bug that causes unusual typographical errors in certain level names.
According to Mario knowledge specialist @MarioBrothBlog on X (formerly Twitter), the bug occurs when players frequently switch between different levels.
Specifically, level names on the pause screen—such as 'Cool, Cool Mountain' and 'Big Boo's Haunt'—begin displaying swapped letters, resulting in incorrect spellings like 'Cool, Cuol Mountain,' 'Cool, Cool Muuntain,' or 'Big Boo's Haont.' These misspellings occur after several transitions between affected levels, and the error appears to be exclusive to the European version of the Nintendo Switch Online N64 Expansion Pack.
While the bug does not impact overall gameplay or progress, it stands out as another peculiar detail added to the long history of Nintendo 64 emulation on modern hardware.
A Nintendo representative has not yet publicly addressed the cause of the bug, and at present, there is no timeline for a potential update or patch to resolve the issue.
The discovery underscores the unique challenges that can arise when classic games are emulated and delivered on new platforms such as the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch Online service, launched in September 2018, and its Expansion Pack upgrade—introduced in October 2021—have played a significant role in preserving vintage titles for new and returning audiences.
However, as with any emulation effort, minor anomalies and unexpected bugs occasionally surface.
This recent Super Mario 64 typo is largely seen as a harmless curiosity rather than a critical problem.
The wider community, including speedrunners and glitch enthusiasts, has noted the bug's potential for amusement and hypothesized playful ways it could be exploited, though there has been no evidence to suggest any major gameplay impact.
As Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack continues to add titles and refine its offerings, players and preservationists alike will keep an eye out for further quirks and hope that such memorable classics are preserved as faithfully as possible.
For now, the "Cool, Cuol Mountain" typo serves as a small but quirky footnote in the larger legacy of Nintendo's approach to game preservation and emulation on the Switch.
