Arrowhead Studios, acclaimed for its 2024 co-op shooter Helldivers 2, unexpectedly captured the spotlight within Nintendo circles this week.

The Swedish developer, best known for its work on PlayStation platforms and collaborations with Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed it once prototyped an arcade rail shooter inspired by Nintendo’s iconic Star Fox series. The revelation surfaced through Arrowhead’s Chief Creative Officer and Helldivers 2 creative director, Johan Pilestedt, who engaged with fans on social media as the new year began.

When asked about the studio's past and future projects, Pilestedt highlighted some of Arrowhead’s earlier prototypes.

Notably, in response to a fan’s hope for a "Star Fox-style game," Pilestedt confirmed that the team had previously pursued such a concept.

The prototype, tentatively dubbed “Eagles of Democracy,” was built in Unreal Engine and aimed to blend arcade action with grounded, strategic gameplay—echoing the spirit of the Star Fox franchise. Pilestedt described the project as an effort to "basically try to capture Star Fox” in both presentation and mechanics, emphasizing its hybrid arcade feel.

Screenshots of the prototype, shared via social platforms, offered a glimpse of the game’s high-flying ambitions.

However, despite internal enthusiasm, “Eagles of Democracy” never progressed beyond its initial development stages and remains unreleased. While Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers 2 stands as one of Sony’s most prominent releases of 2024—with strong sales and active engagement on PlayStation consoles—the studio’s Star Fox-inspired experiment highlights the enduring influence of Nintendo’s storied franchise across the broader video game industry.

Star Fox, first launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993, has established itself as a staple of the rail shooter genre, with subsequent releases on the Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch via Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online services. Although it is highly unlikely that Arrowhead's unreleased rail shooter will appear on a Nintendo console (especially given the studio’s close ties to Sony), the acknowledgment of Star Fox’s legacy from outside developers underscores the franchise’s significance.

Fans continue to campaign for a new Star Fox entry on Nintendo Switch, particularly as nearly a decade has passed since the last mainline series release on the Wii U. Arrowhead Studios, meanwhile, remains in the headlines, most recently addressing player concerns over the pricing of Helldivers 2’s crossover content.

Following criticism, the studio made amends by offering the subsequent wave of digital content free of charge, further demonstrating its responsiveness to the gaming community. The Star Fox series remains a touchstone for rail shooters and a source of inspiration beyond Nintendo’s internal teams.

With industry veterans like Arrowhead openly acknowledging its impact, anticipation for a potential series revival on Nintendo Switch or in future Nintendo Direct events only continues to grow.
