Description

In the annals of gaming history, Nintendo has never shied away from imaginative or unconventional marketing strategies, but one particularly memorable stunt stands out: the record-breaking 'Pasta a la Mario' event, organized for the launch of Super Mario Sunshine.

Developed exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube, Super Mario Sunshine made its debut on August 26, 2002, quickly gaining cult status among fans thanks to its distinctive FLUDD-based gameplay mechanics and the vibrant, vacation-themed setting of Isle Delfino. To celebrate the game's release, Nintendo chose San Francisco's Little Italy as the stage for what would become an unforgettable publicity event.

The company prepared an extraordinary 3,265 pounds of pasta, earning them the Guinness World Record for the largest bowl of pasta ever served at the time.

Attendees were encouraged to arrive in Mario or Luigi costumes, with the incentive to dive into the enormous bowl and uncover hidden Nintendo-themed prizes.

These ranged from collectible memorabilia to exclusive trips, including a coveted grand prize vacation to Hawaii. At the time, Nintendo of America's marketing team commented that they aimed to capture the spirit of Mario's whimsical world and create a lasting memory for fans and families alike.

While footage of this event resurfaced recently—thanks to longtime Nintendo follower Justin D.

Its reappearance in the 2020 Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection for Nintendo Switch drew both new admirers and returning fans, though the compilation saw only a limited release.

However, those who missed out on 3D All-Stars will soon have another opportunity: Nintendo recently confirmed that Super Mario Sunshine is scheduled to join the library of the GameCube NSO (Nintendo Switch Online) app, launching for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The GameCube NSO app, part of the Switch 2 Expansion Pack subscription tier, will launch with three classic titles: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SoulCalibur II.

The addition of Super Mario Sunshine not only expands the reach of Nintendo's rich GameCube legacy but also ensures that a new generation can experience this innovative adventure.

As Nintendo continues to blend nostalgia with fresh hardware experiences, both fans and collectors can look forward to reliving—and perhaps even reimaging—the golden age of Mario in bold new ways.
