Fan Translation of R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital Announced for Sega Saturn After PS1 Patch Success
System Sacom and Bandai’s obscure horror adventure, R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital, is set to receive a new wave of accessibility for Western audiences.
Following last year’s English fan translation patch for the PlayStation 1 port, an upcoming translation for the Sega Saturn version has been officially announced.
This news comes as a welcome development for retro gaming enthusiasts eager to experience the title in both English and French on its original hardware platform.
Originally released in Japan in 1997, R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital is a survival horror game that has long been considered a hidden gem among enthusiasts of the genre.
The narrative places players in the roles of four individuals confined in a hospital during a lethal viral outbreak, where they must unravel the mystery behind a collection of disturbing paintings.
The game distinguishes itself with a blend of animated cutscenes and immersive, first-person exploration, hallmarks of System Sacom’s storytelling and design approach.
On November 12th, the developer Kitchen34 announced the start of the Sega Saturn fan translation project via the SegaXtreme and Delta Island forums.
According to Kitchen34, the translation work for the Sega Saturn version is based on the existing PlayStation 1 patch, which was originally brought to life by contributors SnowyAria, EsperKnight, Cargodin, and blametherobot.
The new translation will credit all previous collaborators and is described as a direct adaptation tailored to the Sega Saturn’s unique hardware.
“I am resuming the translation from the team that previously worked on it for the PS1.
Everything will be duly credited; it’s a straightforward conversion of the translation,” Kitchen34 stated in their official forum announcement.
The PlayStation 1 English translation patch, released last year, was celebrated for making the game’s intricate story and atmospheric gameplay accessible to a broader audience.
This success has fueled demand among Sega Saturn collectors and horror game fans eager to experience the title as it was originally presented on its debut platform.
As the Sega Saturn version boasts slight differences in performance and presentation compared to the PS1 release, this patch is expected to offer new opportunities for players to appreciate R?MJ’s unique qualities.
While R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital has never seen an official English-language release or eShop debut, efforts like these highlight the important role that fan translators play in video game preservation.
By reconstructing classic experiences for new audiences across both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation 1, the community ensures that gaming history remains accessible and vibrant.
Further updates on the translation’s progress will be reported as details emerge, with the community eagerly anticipating the project’s completion and public release.
