Description

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, the mobile adaptation of the iconic Pokémon TCG developed by The Pokémon Company, has finally introduced its highly anticipated Trade feature, marking a significant update for the free-to-play app available via the eShop and mobile platforms.

The new functionality allows players to exchange cards with friends, building on the social and collecting aspects that have defined the franchise for decades. Launched on January 29, 2024, the Trade feature in Pokémon TCG Pocket comes with several important rules and mechanics designed to balance the trading process.

Unlike traditional trading seen in physical TCG or console counterparts, card exchanges in the app require players to manage a set of consumable resources, emphasizing engagement with in-game currencies and limits. To initiate a trade, users must use 'Trade Stamina,' a new resource that replenishes gradually, similar to the app’s existing Wonder Stamina system.

Players regain one Trade Stamina point every 24 hours, with a maximum capacity of five points.

If you’re eager to trade quicker, Trade Hourglasses or Poké Gold can be used to instantly regain stamina points. For those exchanging lower-rarity cards, the process is simple: select a friend, pick the card you wish to trade, and complete the swap within a 72-hour time limit.

But higher-tier trades come with additional restrictions.

Trading cards of higher rarities such as ◇3, ◇4 (ex cards), and ☆1 (full art) requires Trade Tokens—a specific consumable only obtainable through certain in-game events or by converting duplicate cards in the 'My Cards' tab.

For example, a ◇3 rarity swap will set you back 120 Trade Tokens, while a ◇4 trade costs 500, and a ☆1 card requires 400 tokens. Players can earn these Trade Tokens by sacrificing duplicates, with higher-rarity duplicates yielding more tokens.

As clarified in the game’s onboarding tutorial, it takes four ☆1 (full art) cards, each delivering 100 tokens, to reach the 400-token requirement for a high-tier trade, making resource management crucial for collectors aiming for premium exchanges. While some players may find the trading system quite complex, especially given the limits on trading only between friends and within rarity tiers, this mechanic is clearly designed to encourage continual engagement within Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket’s digital ecosystem. This major update coincides with the rollout of the app’s newest digital expansion, 'Space-Time Smackdown,' which releases at 6 am local time on January 30, 2024.

The expansion introduces a fresh set of Generation IV cards, timed perfectly for trainers to flex their collection and trading strategies. Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket continues to innovate in the mobile card game space, blending accessibility with layered mechanics for dedicated fans.

As players around the globe test out the new Trade system, it remains to be seen how these changes will shape the game’s vibrant trading community.
