Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Return to Kanto on Nintendo Switch: 30th Anniversary Digital Release

Nintendo is commemorating 30 years of Pokémon history with the digital release of Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version for Nintendo Switch.

With the Kanto region once again in the spotlight, these renowned Game Boy Advance RPGs are now accessible as digital-only purchases through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store, bringing a reimagined classic experience to both returning fans and new players worldwide. The original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, launched in Japan in 1996, laid the foundation for one of gaming’s most successful franchises.

By 2004, Game Freak’s FireRed and LeafGreen revitalized these titles for the Game Boy Advance, updating visuals, gameplay mechanics, and player features while preserving the turn-based adventure that first captivated millions.

Now, Nintendo Switch users can revisit the Kanto region to encounter the series’ initial 151 Pokémon, accompanied by timeless characters such as Brock, Misty, Professor Oak, and Giovanni. According to Nintendo, "Each of these digital releases is available individually in English, French, or Spanish directly from the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop." Notably, each language release mirrors the original regional editions, so buyers are encouraged to verify their version prior to purchase.

The French and Spanish editions use EU French and EU Spanish, respectively, preserving the authentic language experience. Enhanced for the Game Boy Advance era, FireRed and LeafGreen introduced gameplay standards such as Pokémon abilities, natures, dynamic weather effects, held items, and the option for players to choose their character's gender.

These features remain intact in the Nintendo Switch version, which also offers local co-op functionality—allowing friends to connect and play together without the classic Game Link Cable requirement.

This local wireless multiplayer mode provides a fresh-yet-nostalgic way to experience Kanto alongside friends, though additional software and consoles are necessary for multiplayer sessions. Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version launch for Nintendo Switch on February 27, aligning with Pokémon Day and underscoring the legacy of these beloved titles.

Available for a suggested retail price of $19.99 USD each, players can purchase the games through the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store, with select retailers offering physical cards during the launch week. This release allows a new generation to experience "the challenges and rewards of Kanto for the first time," while longtime fans are invited to reconnect with the origins of Pokémon.
