A recently surfaced LinkedIn statement from a former Ubisoft artist has brought new clarity to the fate of a planned Rayman remake for the Nintendo Switch and other modern platforms.
The artist, Phong, who worked as a Visual Effects (VFX) artist at Ubisoft, revealed that a new version of the original Rayman game had been in active development from 2021 before ultimately being shelved.
The Rayman franchise, one of Ubisoft Montpellier's most iconic creations, originally debuted in 1995 and quickly became a staple on various Nintendo hardware, including classic consoles and the Nintendo eShop.
Known for its innovative platforming mechanics and whimsical world, Rayman carved out a distinct legacy that endures decades later.
Details of the abandoned project were amplified by the fan account "Rayman Together!" on X (formerly Twitter), who cited Phong's professional post.
In his statement, Phong explained, "In 2021, I had the opportunity to challenge myself on a trial project for Rayman at Ubisoft.
Unfortunately, the project did not proceed beyond the early conceptual stages." Phong also shared a selection of early concept logos, hinting at working titles like "Rayman Forever" and "The Story of Rayman."
Phong elaborated, stating, "Ubisoft tasked us with researching logo designs and the home screen for a complete redesign of Rayman.
Since Rayman is the flagship game that launched the studio, the team aimed for thorough research and meticulous planning in hopes of creating a successful new edition."
Although the specific reasons for the project's cancellation were not cited, the news coincides with Ubisoft's publicly stated plans from late 2024, when it confirmed both a Rayman remake and the ongoing development of an all-new Rayman game.
While the remake is no longer in development, hope remains for Rayman fans as no official word of cancellation has been reported regarding the new title.
The Rayman series has seen continued popularity on the Nintendo Switch via classic releases and the eShop, and recent collaborations, such as the Rayman Legends expansion for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, underscore Ubisoft’s commitment to the mascot on Nintendo's hybrid console.
Ubisoft Montpellier, renowned for its expertise in platformers and original character designs, maintains a strong presence in the gaming industry.
As ongoing projects develop, fans of Rayman and Nintendo platforms alike remain optimistic about future announcements, especially concerning the limbless hero’s possible return to the Nintendo Switch and eShop in upcoming years.
