Team Cherry, the acclaimed indie developer behind the hit Metroidvania Hollow Knight, has officially confirmed ongoing development for downloadable content (DLC) for its highly anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.
In a recent, in-depth interview with Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen offered new insights into the team’s current focus and hinted at their creative ambitions for the future. Since the 2017 release of Hollow Knight, Team Cherry has built a loyal following with their atmospheric world-building and challenging gameplay.
Hollow Knight: Silksong, unveiled during a Nintendo Direct and slated for release on platforms including Nintendo Switch and PC, has remained one of the most anticipated titles in the indie game scene.
While a concrete release date for Silksong remains unannounced, anticipation has only increased following the news of additional content now in the works. During the Bloomberg interview, Gibson and Pellen shared that the studio is “actively working on Silksong-themed downloadable content.” Though the development team is dedicated to expanding the Silksong experience, the co-founders made it clear they were not ready to commit to a specific launch window for the DLC at this stage. Looking beyond the immediate future, the conversation also explored Team Cherry’s vision after completing Silksong’s downloadable content.
As Ari Gibson explained, the team is open to creating games beyond the Hollow Knight universe, saying their future titles will likely continue in the vein of "exploring expansive worlds inhabited by memorable characters and formidable bosses." However, he emphasized that the team does not intend to be known solely as the creators of Hollow Knight.
“We’ve got ideas for what returning to these worlds might look like, but we’re excited by the idea of experimenting with new genres and themes to see how that shapes the stories we tell,” Gibson affirmed. When asked if working on the same franchise had become tiresome, Gibson responded, “Not at all.
If we were to develop another Hollow Knight right now, it would be a joy.
But we’re also interested in pursuing the things we’re passionate about in potentially different genres or with different themes.
We’re keen to see what direction that might take us.” Team Cherry’s open approach to game development, coupled with their proven track record—Hollow Knight has sold millions of copies globally and earned multiple Game of the Year nominations—continues to fuel high expectations among fans and industry watchers alike.
With Hollow Knight: Silksong in active development and new content on the horizon for Nintendo Switch and other platforms, the studio remains at the forefront of the indie gaming landscape. As players await further news from Team Cherry, both on Silksong’s release and any possible ventures into new creative territory, the anticipation underscores the lasting impact of one of indie gaming’s most celebrated studios.
