Okami Sequel Announced by Capcom: Director Hideki Kamiya Returns for a New Adventure

Capcom Confirms Okami Sequel with Hideki Kamiya Returning as Director The gaming community was abuzz during The Game Awards 2024 as Capcom officially announced that a sequel to the acclaimed action-adventure game Okami is currently in development.

This reveal marks the long-awaited return of one of the most beloved titles in Capcom’s catalog and brings back original director Hideki Kamiya—whose legendary portfolio includes iconic franchises like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. First launched by Clover Studio in 2006, Okami quickly secured its place as a standout adventure thanks to its painterly sumi-e art style, innovative Celestial Brush gameplay, and memorable mythological narrative.

Okami HD, the celebrated remaster, was later released on multiple platforms—including the Nintendo Switch in 2018—where it received rave reviews and solidified the game as a must-have for action-adventure enthusiasts.

Our Switch review praised the HD port as “one of the easiest recommendations we can make for your Switch library,” applauding its stunning visuals, engaging mechanics, and portable playability. The sequel’s announcement featured a brief teaser trailer, offering a glimpse of the journey ahead.

While platforms and a release window remain under wraps, Capcom acknowledged that, “it might be some time” before further details are shared with the public.

The studio described the upcoming title as a "new adventure in the same vein" as the original Okami, suggesting a deep connection to the series’ roots while promising fresh experiences for returning fans and newcomers alike. On the official Okami website, Capcom provided additional information on the project’s development team.

The next Okami is being produced in collaboration with several talented studios and includes multiple key staff members from the original game.

Notably, M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and the reformed CLOVERS Inc.—with Hideki Kamiya actively involved—are all contributing to the project.

This partnership reunites much of the creative force behind Okami’s unique design and artistic direction. In an official statement shared via the @OkamiOfficial Twitter account, Kamiya expressed his excitement, stating, “Fans will need to wait a while before we share more, but we truly hope you look forward to what’s in store for Amaterasu and companions.” This announcement comes amid a busy season for Capcom, who also revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword at The Game Awards.

While there’s currently no confirmation that the new Okami sequel or Onimusha will launch on Nintendo Switch, Okami HD and Onimusha: Warlords are both available now on the Switch eShop for those eager to revisit these iconic series. As anticipation grows, Okami’s legacy continues on Nintendo Switch and beyond, reminding players why its original adventure remains a critical and commercial favorite.

All eyes will be on Capcom and Hideki Kamiya as fans await further updates on one of the industry’s most anticipated sequels.
