Description

Clovers Studio, the newly-formed video game development team helmed by acclaimed designer Hideki Kamiya, is already generating excitement within the Nintendo and wider gaming community.

Known for iconic titles such as Bayonetta and the original Okami, Kamiya’s influence on action and adventure games is globally recognized.

The studio’s first major announcement—a sequel to the critically acclaimed Okami—has set expectations high.

However, recent statements clarify that Clovers Studio will not limit itself to established franchises moving forward, signaling the potential for new intellectual properties (IPs) in the years to come. In a recent interview with Japanese publication GameSpark, Hideki Kamiya and fellow industry veteran Kento Koyama—both formerly of PlatinumGames—discussed Clovers Studio’s creative outlook.

While the team is launching with Okami 2, their vision extends far beyond sequels or spiritual successors.

"We're considering a broad spectrum for our next project," explained Koyama.

"Whether that means developing a follow-up to an existing IP, creating a spiritual successor, or embarking on an entirely new concept, all options are on the table." Kamiya reinforced this approach, noting the studio would pursue projects—whether original or existing IPs—if the team believed they could inject their distinct creative vision and evoke a genuine sense of excitement. "We're not closing off any possibilities," Kamiya emphasized.

"If there's that ‘wow factor’ in an idea, whether it belongs to a known series or is a completely new property, we'll pursue it if it resonates with our philosophy." For now, Clovers Studio’s immediate priority remains Okami 2, which Hideki Kamiya is directing.

As of March 2025, the anticipated sequel has not received a release date or confirmed platform details.

While the original Okami enjoyed acclaim across PlayStation and Nintendo platforms, fans can look forward to further announcements regarding the sequel’s development and possible Nintendo Switch release, as Clovers Studio finalizes its roadmap. This forward-looking approach marks a significant milestone for the studio and the evolving Japanese game development scene.

Kamiya’s commitment to both honoring classic franchises and innovating with original IP could position Clovers Studio as a key player in shaping the future of story-driven action games.

As anticipation for Okami 2 grows, industry watchers and gamers alike are eager to see what the creative team will unveil beyond their next major release.
