Super Mario Galaxy 2 Breaks Free from Wii, Coming to Nintendo Switch in October 2025 Anniversary Bundle
After years of anticipation from fans, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will finally make its debut outside of the Nintendo Wii platform.
During the recent Nintendo Direct, industry icon Shigeru Miyamoto officially unveiled plans for an expansive Super Mario Bros.
40th Anniversary celebration, with the highly-requested release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as a standout announcement.
The dual-pack, set to launch on October 2, 2025 for the Nintendo Switch, marks the inaugural appearance of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on any platform beyond its original Wii release.
The move comes in response to longtime appeals from the fan community, eager to experience the critically acclaimed sequel on modern hardware.
Notably, while Super Mario Galaxy was previously available as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection on Switch in 2020, this will be the first time Super Mario Galaxy 2 is accessible outside its 2010 Wii debut, where its gameplay innovations and level design earned widespread acclaim.
During the Nintendo Direct presentation, Miyamoto highlighted the decision to reintroduce both Galaxy titles as a core component of the 40th Anniversary festivities.
The dual-pack also serves as a nod to the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie, a collaboration between Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination, which is slated for worldwide release on April 3, 2026.
In a prepared statement, Nintendo emphasized that while the movie will draw on elements from the Galaxy series, it will also celebrate the broader Mario universe, promising a wide array of content for fans.
Complementing the game releases, Nintendo announced a pair of new amiibo figures inspired by the Galaxy games: Mario with Luma (featuring Mario launching from a Launch Star) and Rosalina with a trio of Lumas, depicted as she reads from her iconic Storybook.
Both amiibo will release on April 2, 2026, the day before the film premieres, further enriching the anniversary lineup and offering new collectibles for dedicated fans.
In addition, Nintendo, in partnership with Dark Horse Books, revealed the forthcoming launch of a physical, hardcover edition of Rosalina’s Storybook—the beloved tale featured in Super Mario Galaxy.
Set for release on November 25, 2025, the book will be available for preorder through participating retailers, granting fans the opportunity to own a tangible piece of Galaxy lore.
According to Dark Horse Books, the hardcover is not currently listed on the My Nintendo Store or Barnes & Noble, but it will be widely available elsewhere.
These announcements underscore Nintendo’s commitment to celebrating the enduring legacy of Super Mario Bros.
and delivering fan-favorite content across games, film, and merchandise.
With multiple new releases and commemorative items on the way, the upcoming anniversary is poised to be a defining moment for both Mario fans and the Nintendo Switch platform.
