Nintendo has firmly reaffirmed its commitment to the Nintendo Switch as the company enters a pivotal transitional period with the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Despite the upcoming next-generation hardware, President Shuntaro Furukawa made it clear during Nintendo’s recent financial results briefing that the enduring success of the Switch will not be overlooked in the coming year.
The Japanese gaming giant, celebrated for its innovation and enduring franchises, revealed that it will continue to release new titles for the Nintendo Switch throughout 2025.
Furukawa addressed investors and fans alike by highlighting Nintendo’s approach to supporting both current and future hardware.
As translated in Nintendo's official English transcript, Furukawa explained, “We have announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond as Nintendo Switch titles scheduled for release in 2025.
Since many people still enjoy the Nintendo Switch, our goal is to keep developing appealing software and continue launching new titles for the platform.
At the same time, it is essential to provide exclusive games when debuting new hardware.
With this in mind, we are exploring various ways for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 to ensure the widest possible audience can enjoy our games.”
Nintendo has already set expectations for the immediate future.
Premier titles such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are confirmed for 2025, with the highly anticipated Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition arriving for Switch users next month.
This dedication to robust software support mirrors Nintendo’s historical approach—much like how the company supported the Nintendo 3DS for several years after the initial Switch launch.
The numbers back up this strategy.
As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has surpassed 150 million units sold worldwide—a milestone that cements its status among the best-selling gaming consoles of all time.
With such a massive install base, continued support for the Switch remains a logical and consumer-friendly move as the company transitions toward the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo also confirmed that backward compatibility will be part of the next hardware generation, allowing current Switch owners to carry their existing libraries forward.
Details about the Nintendo Switch 2 are slated for the company’s next Direct presentation in April, with hardware release plans set for later this year.
This staggered, overlapping rollout is designed to ease the transition for both players and developers alike.
As Nintendo looks ahead, the company’s measured, dual-platform approach underscores its commitment to fans old and new.
By ensuring a steady stream of new content for the Nintendo Switch, even as excitement builds for the Switch 2, Nintendo is setting the stage for another era of gaming success.
