The latest video game sales data from Famitsu, Japan's trusted industry tracker, highlights a significant milestone for the Nintendo Switch 2 and a banner week for the Mario Kart franchise.
In the report for the week ending June 15, 2025, Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, has continued to set an impressive pace, cementing its status as a major force in the Japanese market.
According to Famitsu's estimates, the Nintendo Switch 2 moved 153,205 units in its second week on the market.
This strong showing brings the Switch 2's cumulative sales in Japan to 1,101,136 units—a remarkable figure achieved in just two weeks following its highly anticipated launch.
The robust performance underscores the enduring appeal of Nintendo hardware and the company’s consistent ability to ignite consumer excitement with each new generation.
Game sales also saw notable activity, with Mario Kart World emerging as the best-selling title in Japan during this period.
The latest entry in Nintendo’s beloved Mario Kart series sold 134,900 copies in a single week, pushing its lifetime sales to 917,466 units.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a perennial favorite among Switch owners, also made a return to the top 10 chart with 6,460 copies sold during the week.
Collectively, these numbers underscore the widespread popularity and lasting power of the Mario Kart franchise.
The Nintendo Switch family, despite the launch of its successor, continued to show solid performance.
Across all current Switch models—including the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED—a total of 13,319 units were sold throughout the week.
This figure illustrates healthy demand and highlights the platform's longevity, even as the Switch 2 ushers in a new era for Nintendo's hardware ecosystem.
A spokesperson for Nintendo Japan previously stated, "Our team is thrilled to see continued enthusiasm for both new and existing Nintendo platforms.
The reception for the Switch 2 and games like Mario Kart World demonstrates the strength of our community and our development partners."
With the Nintendo Switch 2 surpassing one million units in record time and Mario Kart World leading software sales, Nintendo's momentum in the Japanese market remains strong as 2025 unfolds.
Both consumers and industry analysts will be watching closely to see how the Switch 2 performs long-term, and which titles emerge as ongoing chart-toppers throughout the year, especially as Nintendo continues to expand its lineup on the Switch 2 and the Nintendo eShop.
