Nintendo continues to innovate in the hardware space, with recent patent filings suggesting exciting new features are in development for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
First reported by Nintendo Patents Watch and recorded in documentation from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the filings describe new Joy-Con attachments—a rotary crank and a clickable wheel—that could expand the interactive possibilities of the upcoming Switch hardware.
Building on the success of the Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Con controllers, which helped the platform surpass 125 million units sold globally, Nintendo appears to be exploring further hardware advancements.
The company's experimentation is evident in past innovations like detachable controllers, HD rumble, and versatile play modes, all of which have set a high bar for Nintendo’s approach to user engagement and gameplay variety.
According to the patent details, the crank attachment consists of a rotary disc maintained in position by two magnets and monitored by a mouse sensor through an integrated window.
Another attachment, referred to as a 'clickable wheel,' operates by relaying rotational movement to the mouse sensor using a gear train mechanism, with each click activating the SL button.
This wheel component is further equipped with an additional button to interact with the SR button, hinting at multifaceted control input.
While the exact applications for these accessories remain unclear, the new designs open the door to a variety of potential gameplay experiences.
Industry observers have pointed out that the crank, in particular, draws obvious comparisons to the Playdate handheld console, which employs a similar mechanic.
However, unlike the Playdate, Nintendo’s approach leverages the modularity and sensor capabilities of the Joy-Con 2, potentially broadening the scope for creative game designs on the Nintendo Switch 2.
A Nintendo spokesperson has not commented directly on the patent, as is standard procedure regarding speculative or early-stage technology development.
However, the continuous registration of hardware patents underscores Nintendo’s commitment to expanding the ways players can interact with their platforms.
Though not all patents translate into commercial products, Nintendo has a proven track record of surprising the gaming community by turning inventive concepts into household staples.
As with many innovations first discovered through public filings, official news and additional details are typically shared during dedicated Nintendo Direct presentations or official eShop announcements.
Professional gamers, developers, and fans will be watching closely as Nintendo shapes the future of interactive entertainment.
Should these attachments make their way to mainstream release, they are poised to further distinguish the Nintendo Switch 2 as a uniquely versatile platform in the hardware landscape.
