Description

Nintendo has officially announced the discontinuation of its popular My Nintendo Gold Points program, bringing a significant change to how Nintendo Switch players earn and redeem rewards on the platform.

Starting March 24, 2025, users will no longer be able to accrue Gold Points through the purchase of digital or physical Nintendo Switch games.

This marks the end of an era for one of the Nintendo Switch’s best-known loyalty schemes, beloved by gamers for providing digital discounts. The My Nintendo Gold Points initiative, introduced with the launch of the Nintendo Switch in 2017, has rewarded players with points upon purchasing select digital and physical titles.

These points, typically amounting to 5% of the purchase price, could then be applied towards future Nintendo eShop purchases, offering a practical way to save money on anticipated first-party and indie titles.

Over the years, the Gold Points program has been recognized as a standout incentive, especially for loyal Nintendo Switch players and frequent eShop shoppers. While the Gold Points program is being sunsetted, Nintendo has confirmed via a statement that Platinum Points will remain unaffected.

Gold Points will no longer be obtainable after March 24, 2025, except in specific scenarios.

Players who pre-order eligible digital games before the cutoff date will still receive Gold Points, even if payment is processed after March 24.

Additionally, customers who purchase eligible physical Switch games released before March 24, 2025, may still earn Gold Points, provided the purchase occurs within the first 12 months of the game’s initial launch. Importantly, Nintendo has clarified that all accrued Gold Points remain valid for up to 12 months following the date they are earned.

This redemption window extends beyond March 24, 2025, allowing users to continue applying their saved points towards Nintendo Switch digital purchases well into 2026, if necessary. The decision to discontinue the My Nintendo Gold Points program comes at a time of transition for Nintendo, as anticipation builds around their next-generation hardware platform, often referred to as the "Switch 2".

While Nintendo has not released details regarding a potential replacement rewards scheme, the company has assured users that their Platinum Points program and other My Nintendo account features will be unaffected by this change. For the time being, Nintendo Switch owners are encouraged to make the most of the remaining months for earning and redeeming Gold Points through the eShop and eligible physical purchases.

Though the removal of this rewards option is disappointing for many, Nintendo’s clear communication ensures players have ample opportunity to maximize their benefits while the program is still live.
