Nintendo Patents Attachable Joy-Con Crank Accessory, Hinting at New Gameplay Innovations

Nintendo has long been recognized for its pioneering approach to gaming hardware, frequently reinventing the way players interact with their favorite titles.

Continuing this tradition of innovation, Nintendo recently filed a patent that draws attention from both developers and fans: an attachable crank accessory designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers.

The newly published patent describes a compact, add-on device that utilizes magnets to secure itself to the side of a Joy-Con.

At the heart of the accessory is a rotary disc mechanism, somewhat reminiscent of a fishing reel, that includes a clickable wheel.

This rotary disc is engineered to allow rotational input, which is tracked via a mouse sensor positioned behind a transparent window.

Crucially, the feedback from the rotating and clicking wheel is integrated with the Joy-Con’s hardware, transmitting corresponding signals to the SL and SR buttons.

According to the patent, this design could serve various gameplay functions—though its specifications naturally suggest applications in fishing-themed games or any title requiring a rotary input.

While Nintendo has frequently filed patents that remain conceptual, this design’s practicality and unique functionality align with Nintendo’s history of creating memorable gaming experiences through inventive hardware.

A Nintendo spokesperson noted in the patent documentation that the accessory’s rotary wheel not only enhances tactile interaction but also allows developers the flexibility to program the clicking mechanism for varied in-game actions.

By providing both magnetic attachment and discrete button integration, the device could simplify user installation and deliver a new dimension of physical engagement for Nintendo Switch users.

Historically, Nintendo’s hardware innovations—from the Wii Remote to the versatile Joy-Con—have propelled the company to several sales milestones.

The Nintendo Switch itself has now surpassed 125 million units sold worldwide since its 2017 launch, ranking among the most successful consoles in the history of gaming.
