Description

Nintendo has kicked off 2025 with a notable update to its Nintendo Switch Online service, expanding the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) library available to subscribers.

Effective January 24, 2025, three classic titles have been added: the SNK fighting classic Fatal Fury 2 (originally released in 1993/94), the action RPG Super Ninja Boy from Culture Brain (1992), and Sutte Hakkun (1997), a unique action-puzzle title that first launched on the Super Famicom's Satellaview peripheral. This release is significant for retro game enthusiasts and Nintendo Switch Online users, as it both adds variety and marks the debut of Sutte Hakkun on Western Switch consoles.

Originally reserved for Japan’s Super Famicom system, Sutte Hakkun highlights Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to bringing lesser-known gems and region-exclusive offerings to a global audience via the eShop platform. According to Nintendo, Japan's Switch Online service received the same SNES titles as part of this synchronized update.

To play these new additions, users are required to download the Super Nintendo application from the Nintendo Switch eShop and maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription at the base membership level or higher. Each new game enriches the already diverse Super Nintendo library available to Switch Online members.

Fatal Fury 2 stands out for its historical significance in the fighting game genre, originally developed and published by SNK.

The title was a cornerstone of arcade culture and home console gaming in the early 1990s, noted for its competitive mechanics and vibrant roster of characters.

Super Ninja Boy, developed by Culture Brain, blends side-scrolling action with RPG elements—an approach that distinguished it among its contemporaries when first released. Sutte Hakkun, the new addition with Super Famicom roots, offers intricate puzzle-solving mechanics that leverage color absorption and movement, a concept praised among retro fans who previously experienced it through Satellaview broadcasts.

Its inclusion on the Nintendo Switch platform grants a wider audience access to an experience that was, until now, largely unavailable outside Japan. Nintendo’s ongoing updates to the Switch Online retro catalog underscore the platform’s value for fans of classic titles.

By continually sourcing and porting games from across its history and regions, Nintendo reaffirms its dedication to maintaining a vibrant, accessible archive of gaming landmarks on Nintendo Switch. Users can find these titles in the Super Nintendo application available on the Switch eShop.

To date, Nintendo Switch Online’s growing SNES collection remains a significant draw for both seasoned gamers and newcomers to Nintendo’s storied past.
