Description

Nintendo has once again enriched its Nintendo Switch Online service with a new update to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game library.

As of September 18, 2024, subscribers can access four additional classic titles, including one beloved western release and three highly regarded Super Famicom entries from Japan.

This strategic expansion continues Nintendo’s commitment to preserving gaming history and delivering value to Switch Online members. The headliner of this update is the iconic beat ’em up, Battletoads Double Dragon, originally launched for the SNES in 1993.

Developed as a crossover between Rare's Battletoads franchise and Technōs Japan's Double Dragon series, the game invites players to control the Battletoads—Zitz, Rash, and Pimple—teaming up with Double Dragon’s Billy and Jimmy Lee.

Together, they face off against formidable foes, including the Dark Queen and Shadow Boss, combining signature moves from both series.

Players can utilize a diverse set of martial arts techniques, from heavy kicks and devastating punches to thrilling throws and vehicle-based stages like the infamous Speeder Bike and Space Pod sequences. Three additional Super Famicom titles are making their debut for international audiences through the Switch Online service.

First is Big Run, a 1991 racing game challenging players to conquer the grueling Paris-Dakar rally from Tripoli to Dakar.

The game distinguishes itself with tactical elements, requiring players to manage sponsorship funds, hire staff, and acquire spare parts to survive the damaging conditions across nine punishing stages. Next is Cosmo Gang The Puzzle, a 1993 action-puzzle title better known to western players as Pac-Attack.

This game, developed by Namco, blends fast-paced falling-block mechanics with competitive multiplayer and strategic 100-stage challenges.

Success depends on clever clearing of containers and Cosmo characters, leveraging combos and mastering three diverse gameplay modes. Rounding out the new additions is Kunio-kun no Dodgeball da yo Zen’in Shūgō!, a 1993 entry from the River City sports spin-off series renowned in Japan.

In this title, players square off in intense dodgeball matches, assembling custom teams and using special moves to outwit international opponents.

The game’s unique twist includes hidden stage features and upgradable teammates, delivering an engaging sports experience rarely seen outside Japan. On the Japanese Nintendo Switch Online service, the lineup includes Big Run, Cosmo Gang The Puzzle, and Koei Tecmo's 1994 neo romance release Angelique, further rounding out the region's exclusive offerings.

These additions build on an impressive library of over 60 SNES and Super Famicom games made available since the subscription service launched in 2018. By bringing more Super Famicom titles to a global audience through Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo continues to demonstrate its dedication to gaming preservation and player satisfaction.

With every new Switch Online update, retro enthusiasts and newcomers alike gain access to timeless classics that have shaped video game history, all within the convenience of the modern Nintendo Switch ecosystem.
