Nintendo Switch Online: No Immediate Plans for GameCube or 3DS Libraries, Confirms President Furukawa With over 36 million subscribers as of 2023, Nintendo Switch Online has become a core part of the Nintendo Switch ecosystem, offering users access to classic titles and online features for a range of legacy platforms.

Since adding Game Boy games to its digital catalog in February this year, fans have increasingly called for more retro libraries to join the service.

Notable requests include entire libraries from the GameCube and Nintendo 3DS eras, which remain absent from the current roster. Addressing these requests during a recent shareholder Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the company currently has "no specifics to share" regarding the addition of other legacy platforms, such as the 3DS, to Switch Online subscription tiers.

Furukawa’s comments reinforce Nintendo’s traditionally cautious approach to legacy content.

While the demand for platforms such as the GameCube remains strong among the community, the company appears to be prioritizing curated re-releases instead of integrating entire libraries through its subscription service. Rather than expanding the Switch Online service to include GameCube and Wii U libraries, Nintendo’s strategy has focused on select remasters and re-releases for the Nintendo Switch.

Recent examples include Pikmin and Pikmin 2, which were made available via Nintendo eShop on June 22, 2023.

This follows the surprise launch of Metroid Prime Remastered earlier in the year, further demonstrating Nintendo’s commitment to revitalizing select classics rather than offering blanket platform support within its online subscription model. Furukawa’s statement, delivered in a straightforward response to investor inquiries, underscores that while future additions to Nintendo Switch Online are not entirely ruled out, there is "nothing specific to announce" about platforms like the GameCube or 3DS at this time.

This measured approach aligns with Nintendo’s ongoing efforts to uphold the value of its classic titles and maintain excitement through occasional, high-profile remasters and new releases. Meanwhile, the Switch Online service continues to expand its offerings for existing platforms.

The Sega Mega Drive / Genesis library, part of Nintendo Switch Online’s expansion tier, recently gained four new titles.

Additionally, classic Game Boy Advance games, including Fire Emblem, have been steadily added to the platform, providing fans with a growing selection of retro experiences.

As Nintendo Switch continues its six-year lifecycle with no signs of slowing, the online platform remains a vital avenue for classic games, even as fans hope for more extensive legacy support.

For now, dedicated players can look forward to curated remasters and incremental updates rather than full GameCube or 3DS library integration within Nintendo Switch Online.
