Nine Sols Kickstarter Surpasses Goal: Red Candle Games Brings Taopunk Action Platformer to Nintendo Switch

Red Candle Games, acclaimed for their atmospheric horror title Detention, has launched a successful crowdfunding initiative for their latest project, Nine Sols.

The Taipei-based developer quickly exceeded its Kickstarter goal of approximately $105,900, securing funding within days of launch.

This ensures that Nine Sols is moving forward, with a tentative release planned for major platforms including the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles. According to Red Candle Games, while the primary focus remains on completing development for PC, the studio has already obtained a Nintendo Switch development kit.

"We’re planning for a release on both Nintendo and Sony consoles," a representative shared, "but porting will only begin once we’re near the end of development.

Due to Nine Sols being created during a transitional period between console generations, a complete list of supported platforms is difficult to confirm at this time." Nine Sols stands out as a 2D action platformer defined by its innovative "deflection-focused" combat system, immersive storylines, and a visually striking Taopunk aesthetic—an inventive fusion of Taoist philosophy and cyberpunk motifs.

Players will assume the role of Yi, a legendary hero awakened in the sanctuary world of New Kunlun.

As the narrative unfolds, Yi embarks on a vengeful journey against the formidable rulers known as the 9 Sols, employing a combat style reminiscent of Sekiro’s timing and precision. Gameplay features an agile mix of classic platforming mechanics—such as dash, double jump, and wall climb—interwoven with contemporary elements like deflection, charging attacks, and the use of a mystical Godly Bow for ranged combat.

Core mechanics have been extensively iterated upon by Red Candle Games to ensure responsive controls and a dynamic player's experience.

The studio emphasizes close-range encounters, challenging players to master timing and strategy using unique skills such as Yi’s Chi-charged attacks and talisman-based explosives. Each area within New Kunlun, the mysterious in-game world, is hand-crafted, drawing from anime and manga influences to deliver vibrant, meticulously animated environments.

Players can expect to meet a cast of memorable NPCs, unravel intricate lore, and access RPG-style progression systems—involving upgrades, skill acquisition, and the use of rare materials like Jin for equipment enhancements. Sound design in Nine Sols also receives special attention.

The developers aim to blend traditional Eastern instrumentation with modern electronic synthesis, creating an audio landscape that mirrors the game’s distinctive Taopunk world and deepens storytelling immersion. Red Candle Games has garnered recognition for both their narrative ambition and visual artistry, with Detention finding critical and commercial success on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch eShop.
