Nightdive Studios and ID Software have officially unveiled the definitive re-release of two of the most iconic ‘90s first-person shooters, Heretic and Hexen, at QuakeCon 2025.
Now available as a single package titled 'Heretic + Hexen', the collection is accessible on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms (via Steam and GOG) for $14.99 USD.
The newly launched set is a comprehensive anthology, uniting the original titles—Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel—alongside two brand new episodes developed in collaboration by Nightdive Studios and ID Software.
Titled Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, these episodes were created exclusively for this release.
As with Nightdive Studios’ previous restoration projects, Heretic + Hexen arrives enhanced with a robust suite of features for modern hardware.
Players can enjoy online cross-platform multiplayer deathmatch and cooperative modes supporting up to 16 players.
Local split-screen multiplayer is also included, with support for up to 4 players on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and up to 8 players on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
The collection features an improved, toggleable Tome of Power soundtrack by acclaimed composer Andrew Hulshult, community-published mod support through an in-game mod browser, and performance upgrades enabling multithreaded rendering with up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on next-gen systems and PC.
Expanding accessibility, the Heretic + Hexen package introduces user interface updates, improved legibility and contrast, screen effects adjustments, and text-to-speech tools.
Modern controller enhancements include a weapon carousel for quick swaps and gyroscopic aiming for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 users.
In total, the collection boasts 117 campaign maps and 120 maps optimized for deathmatch play.
A dedicated Vault section also unlocks original concept art and unused sprites from the games’ development.
Heretic, first released on PC in 1994 by Raven Software and published by ID Software, was renowned for innovatively using a modified DOOM engine.
Its successor, Hexen, followed in 1995 and was later ported to consoles such as the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64, contributing to the legacy of both franchises.
In addition to its digital launch, Limited Run Games has confirmed plans for physical editions of Heretic + Hexen on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
These will include a standard, upgraded, and a premium Big Box Edition.
The latter bundles the recreated Tome of Power soundtrack, composed by Andrew Hulshult, with input from both Nightdive Studios and ID Software, which can also be purchased separately in digital format on Bandcamp for $9.
Finally, to reward longtime fans, GOG users who already own the original versions of Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel will automatically receive the new collection in their digital library, at no extra cost.
Heretic + Hexen’s definitive re-release stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic shooters, now revitalized for a new generation across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
