Thief: The Dark Project Remaster Coming to Nintendo Switch — Nightdive Studios Confirms Winter Release Window

Nightdive Studios has announced a remaster of Thief: The Dark Project for Nintendo Switch and future Nintendo Switch hardware, confirming a Winter release window and a free upgrade path for owners who move to the next‑generation Switch platform.

Thief: The Dark Project was originally developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 1998; the remaster will also include the additional missions and updates from the 1999 Thief Gold edition.

The studio, known for reviving classic PC titles with its KEX engine, said this release focuses on modernizing visuals, textures and animations while preserving the original stealth design that made the series influential.

Nightdive described the update as a visual and technical refresh that retains the core mechanics first introduced by Looking Glass Studios in 1998.

Nightdive’s statement on platform support was clear: the company intends to offer a free upgrade from the Nintendo Switch version to the version for Nintendo’s next hardware, and the remaster is scheduled for release during the Winter window later this year.

The studio has not provided a specific launch date.

Key gameplay features carried into the remaster include:

- Light and sound as primary gameplay systems: Thief was one of the first mainstream stealth games to hinge movement and detection on lighting and audible cues.

- Advanced NPC detection: Guards react to visual and auditory cues, investigate disturbances, and can raise alarms when alerted.

- Stealth toolkit: The original’s arsenal — lockpicks, blackjack, arrows with specialized effects, and other thief tools — will be present to support varied stealth approaches.

- Included content: All expansions and updates from Thief Gold (1999) are bundled in the remaster.

For Nintendo Switch players, that packaging means the remaster should be available through Nintendo’s digital storefront at launch, as is standard for first‑party Switch releases.

Nightdive has not yet detailed pricing, regional release plans, or which storefront storefronts beyond Switch will carry the title.

Thief: The Dark Project remains a landmark in stealth design.

Nightdive’s remaster aims to make the 1998 classic more accessible on modern Nintendo hardware while preserving the atmospheric systems that defined Garrett’s early heists.
