NieR:Automata Surpasses 10 Million Copies Sold—Square Enix Teases Series Future on Nintendo Switch

NieR:Automata has officially exceeded a major sales milestone, with Square Enix announcing the action RPG has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

This achievement was revealed in a special anniversary video commemorating the game's ninth year since its original debut.

Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, NieR:Automata originally launched in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, before making its widely praised Nintendo Switch debut in October 2022 as NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. Since its release, NieR:Automata has received critical acclaim for its unique storytelling, innovative game mechanics, and memorable soundtrack—helping the title attain cult status and continued commercial success.

Back in December 2024, Square Enix reported that cumulative sales and downloads had reached 9 million units.

Just a little over a year later, the number has climbed by another million—a remarkable testament to the game's enduring appeal nearly a decade since launch.

The Nintendo Switch port in particular has further expanded the game's audience, earning praise for its technical performance and accessibility on the go via the eShop. The anniversary video did more than celebrate past achievements; it teased future developments for the NieR series.

As the trailer concluded, a cryptic message appeared on screen: “NieR:Automata to be continued...” While no additional details were officially shared, the message clearly signals that Square Enix is planning new content or projects related to the celebrated franchise.

In a rewritten statement echoing the company’s sentiment, Square Enix indicated that the legacy of NieR continues, inviting fans to look forward to what lies ahead for the series. Since its inception as a sequel to the original 2010 game NieR, which itself was later remade as NieR Replicant in 2021, the NieR series has expanded across a variety of media, including novels, manga, anime, stage productions, and merchandise collaborations.

The last major game release in the series was Nier Reincarnation, a mobile RPG that launched in 2021 but ended its global service in 2024.

Despite frequent teases, Square Enix has kept details about new mainline entries or major spin-offs under wraps, although the company hinted as recently as late 2024 that it was “preparing just a little something.” NieR:Automata’s latest sales milestone and the Switch’s strong performance underscore the lasting enthusiasm from longtime fans and new players alike.

With the tantalizing promise of more to come, the NieR series continues to build momentum as one of Square Enix’s most creatively ambitious properties. Stay tuned for updates on NieR:Automata and the future of the NieR series, including further announcements from Square Enix and possible new releases on the Nintendo Switch and beyond.
