When Virtua Fighter debuted in arcades in 1993, Sega AM2 under Yu Suzuki helped establish one of the first mainstream 3D fighting games, powered by Sega's Model 1 hardware.

The original arcade release is widely cited for its early use of real-time 3D polygonal characters and for laying groundwork that later 3D fighters would build on.

Sega's home hardware strategy in the mid-1990s included the 32-bit Sega Saturn console and the 32X add-on for the Mega Drive/Genesis, both introduced in 1994, and both eventually received ports of Virtua Fighter alongside other arcade conversions.

Now in 2026, a fan modder operating as SEGA MODEL KING, also known online as WangDrum, has produced a high-definition remaster of the Virtua Fighter 32X port, delivering an upscaled PC build and a higher framerate.

The project focuses on the 32X edition's original 320x224 resolution and technical constraints, and it aims to present that version with modern display fidelity while preserving the original gameplay and assets.

WangDrum explained the core technical challenge in lay terms: the 32X release confined vertex positions to a 320x224 pixel grid during the final rendering stage, so a straight-up upscale left character movement limited to that low-resolution grid.

To overcome this, the modder intercepted the camera-space floating-point vertex, matrix, bone, and camera data during the SH-2 interpreter's vertex transformation phase, reconstructed the coordinate space, and re-rendered the 3D geometry with a custom floating-point renderer.

In the resulting build, the original Mega Drive/32X handles the 2D elements while the custom renderer processes the 3D geometry free from the original pixel grid.

In addition to upscaling, WangDrum added new interpolation to allow the 3D geometry to render at 60 frames per second rather than the original 30FPS cadence.

The higher framerate and resolution reveal interesting development shortcuts used in the 32X build: characters were rendered with simplified faces during gameplay but received fully detailed features during win poses, where the hardware could concentrate rendering resources on a single fighter.

The 32X port of Virtua Fighter has been historically notable for attempting to replicate arcade visuals on add-on hardware that had a limited commercial lifespan.

The new PC remaster by WangDrum has attracted attention online, with fans praising the technical work and asking about potential projects for other 32X releases.

For now, the modder remains focused on refining the Virtua Fighter build, a project that underscores both the ingenuity of 1990s development teams and the ongoing role of preservationists and modders in making obscure ports accessible on modern systems.

This remaster is part of a broader trend in community-driven preservation: reverse engineering, custom rendering, and careful emulation are allowing historically important but technically constrained releases to be studied, experienced, and appreciated with modern display standards while keeping original assets intact.
