Golden Slumbers Ltd.'s Kickstarter for The Rubber-Keyed Wonder, a companion book to the 2024 documentary of the same name, closed on Monday 2 November 2026 after raising £112,000 — well above its initial £30,000 target.

The campaign launched on 1 October 2026 and was created to mark the 45th anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, offering an illustrated history and archival features that chronicle the platform's influence on British gaming and bedroom programming.

Authored by gaming historian Kim Justice — who previously wrote Arcade Decades - '80s Edition for Numskull Publishing — The Rubber-Keyed Wonder promises more than 200 pages of written and visual material drawn from Spectrum archives and contributions from key industry figures.

The book is presented as a close companion to the Gracious Films documentary produced and directed by Anthony and Nicola Caulfield; backers at certain tiers also receive a 42-minute documentary produced by Gracious Films.

Organisers confirmed that the Kickstarter met all stretch goals during the final month of the campaign.

Those unlocked additions include extra chapters on Portugal's ZX Spectrum museum, hardware curiosities such as the Micro Speech add-on, and a feature paying tribute to the era's pokes, cheats and hand-drawn maps.

The project will single out 48 ZX Spectrum games that helped define a generation, and backers helped fund expanded coverage and special content during the campaign.

The Rubber-Keyed Wonder will be produced in multiple formats: digital, paperback, hardback and a Collector's Edition.

A limited run of 480 individually numbered editions will include an exclusive dust cover and bookmarks, and are expected to be particularly desirable to collectors.

Golden Slumbers offered signed and special Collector's Edition copies at higher pledge levels during the Kickstarter window.

Publisher and contributors framed the book as a definitive document of the modest but influential Sinclair home computer, celebrating a machine that shaped decades of UK game development.

With the campaign closed and all stretch goals funded, production now moves forward toward fulfilment for backers and broader availability in the formats announced.
