Decemberborn Interactive, acclaimed for their retro-inspired metroidvania Cathedral, has officially announced Cathedral: Crow's Curse, a highly anticipated prequel set to launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC (via Steam).
This new entry builds on the success of the 2019 original, which blended nostalgic pixel-art visuals with action-adventure gameplay, earning a devoted following upon its release on PC, later expanding to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and even the Evercade platform.
Cathedral quickly became known for its vast, interconnected world reminiscent of classic NES titles, yet went beyond the constraints of early hardware to deliver a robust, modern metroidvania experience.
Players originally took on the role of a nameless knight, journeying through mysterious landscapes with the aid of the spirit Soul.
The title's combination of challenging combat, item collection, and exploration has helped it carve out a distinct space among indie action-adventure platforms.
In their latest announcement, Decemberborn Interactive revealed that Cathedral: Crow's Curse is set in the same expansive universe but shifts the focus to Crow, a skilled Shade Sentinel first introduced as an NPC in the original Cathedral.
This new prequel promises a brand-new storyline that dives deeper into the lore of the Shade Sentinels and the enigmatic curse afflicting the land.
According to the development team, players will "step into the shadows and unravel the fate of the Shade Sentinels, parrying and dodging through a seamless, interconnected world to uncover the origins of the curse."
Cathedral: Crow's Curse will showcase a significantly enhanced art style compared to its predecessor, featuring dynamic lighting and improved animations.
Players can look forward to battling ancient guardians, confronting the dark Magnus Cultists of Shade Forest, and confronting the mysterious Architect.
Alongside main quests, the game will also offer a variety of towns and biomes, numerous characters—both allies and adversaries—and a wealth of side quests and upgrades to discover.
Although Decemberborn Interactive has not yet confirmed an official release date for Cathedral: Crow's Curse, fans can already wishlist the game on Steam to stay updated on future announcements and development milestones.
The recent teaser trailer highlights the new visual improvements, giving a glimpse of the evolved gameplay that awaits returning Cathedral fans and newcomers alike.
