Namco has formally launched NAMCO LEGENDARY 2026, an initiative built around milestone anniversaries for several of its arcade and console franchises.
The program arrives as Galaga marks its 45th anniversary and The Adventures of Valkyrie, Genpei Touma Den, and Family Stadium each hit 40 years, while Time Crisis reaches its 30th year.
Namco says the effort will combine renewed content development, events, collaborations and merchandise tied to these legacy brands.
According to Namco, the NAMCO LEGENDARY 2026 program will prioritize continuous development of new content intended to revitalize and enliven those brands, with the stated goal of creating an environment where these titles are easily experienced by both longtime fans and new players.
What the announcement covers
- Games and re-releases: Namco lists recent and prior reissues among the celebrations, including previous Arcade Archives releases such as Galaga, VS.
Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu, and Genpei Touma Den.
The announcement also references Tassei Denki’s G'AIM'E Light Gun re-release of Time Crisis.
Arcade Archives titles have previously appeared on modern digital storefronts including the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch.
- Events and collaborations: The initiative will include event programming under the Namco Game Selection Summer Market label and collaboration projects grouped as NAMCO LEGENDARY Mountains.
- Merchandise: Namco plans themed merchandise offerings including blankets, pins, t-shirts and stickers as part of the celebration lineup.
Archival material and Famitsu partnership
Namco’s statement was accompanied by a collaboration with Japanese outlet Famitsu, which published early design documents and developer notes tied to Time Crisis and Galaga.
Famitsu’s coverage revealed several early development details for Time Crisis: the protagonist was originally named Richard Sander and the project at one stage carried the working title Richard Sander: Emergency Measures.
Early story outlines reportedly placed events in New York and centered on a timed bomb-plot mechanic, and overseas staff suggested the name Deadline before the team settled on Time Crisis.
Famitsu also published alternate name lists for characters that include early forms of Richard Miller, Wild Dog and Rachel Macpherson; the outlet noted Rachel Macpherson appears to reference model Elle Macpherson in the naming conventions under consideration.
Namco has not announced new standalone titles as part of NAMCO LEGENDARY 2026 beyond the catalog releases and archival material highlighted in its initial statement.
The company’s ongoing initiative clearly blends preservation, merchandising and public-facing events to spotlight decades-old franchises for contemporary audiences on platforms and events that include digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop and live promotional programming.
