Super Mario Galaxy Chosen as Inspiration for Next Super Mario Movie, Say Miyamoto and Meledandri
Nintendo’s iconic mascot Mario has embarked on countless adventures since his debut, evolving from his roots in platformers to a franchise spanning multiple genres and media formats.
Following the runaway success of the first Super Mario Movie — produced by Nintendo in collaboration with animation powerhouse Illumination — anticipation has been high regarding the creative direction for its cinematic sequel.
Now, in a recent interview with Polygon, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri have revealed why Super Mario Galaxy was selected as the inspiration for the latest movie installment.
The original Super Mario Movie was deeply rooted in the whimsical Mushroom Kingdom, bringing beloved locations and characters from Nintendo Switch games and eShop releases to life.
For the sequel, both Miyamoto and Meledandri wanted to venture into fresh territory, exploring the rich, cosmic world first introduced in the critically acclaimed Wii title Super Mario Galaxy (originally released in 2007, and later remastered for Nintendo Switch in Super Mario 3D All-Stars).
Addressing the selection process for the film’s direction, Meledandri explained that the collaboration with Nintendo began with broad discussions about potential settings.
"We considered continuing in familiar worlds like Super Mario World or even Super Mario Odyssey," Meledandri stated in the Polygon interview.
"But as soon as we started talking about Super Mario Galaxy, its cinematic qualities and the emotional depth tied to Rosalina and its music made it stand out as an inspiring direction for a new story."
Miyamoto echoed this sentiment, noting that the creative team deliberately avoided framing the project strictly as a sequel.
Instead, they aimed to evolve the narrative while retaining a natural connection to the original.
"Rather than repeat the adventures set in the Mushroom Kingdom, we felt it was the right time to expand Mario’s universe — literally — and explore the limitless possibilities presented by the galaxy setting," Miyamoto noted.
He further shared that while the first movie did not attempt to recreate the games verbatim, filmmakers inevitably found points where the spirit of the Nintendo Switch’s Super Mario Galaxy and past Mario releases aligned with the film's narrative.
"With the new movie, while we still don't want to restrict ourselves to a direct sequel format, elements that continued from the first film organically fit with the cosmic adventure theme, creating a blend that reflects both evolution and continuity within the Mario universe."
Super Mario Galaxy remains one of Nintendo’s most celebrated titles, praised for its innovative gravity-based gameplay, stellar visuals, and orchestral soundtrack.
By drawing inspiration from this fan-favorite game, the latest Super Mario Movie aims to offer audiences a fresh cinematic experience that leverages the emotional resonance and boundless imagination synonymous with Nintendo’s celebrated franchise.
This strategic creative shift signals Nintendo and Illumination’s commitment to honoring Mario’s legacy while continuously expanding its reach to new and returning fans through the power of both gaming and film.
