ZPF Pre-Orders Open: Mega Cat Studios Launches Genesis Shoot 'Em Up for Q1 2025 Release

Mega Cat Studios has officially opened pre-orders for ZPF, a new side-scrolling shoot 'em up title set to land on the Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive in select regions) in Q1 2025.

Following the game's successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, ZPF is generating considerable buzz among retro gaming enthusiasts eager for a fresh experience on classic hardware. Developed by the independent ZPF Team—comprising Perry 'Gryzor' Sessions, Mikael Tillander, and Jamie 'JGVex' Vance—ZPF draws inspiration from genre mainstays such as Lords of Thunder, Forgotten Worlds, Elemental Master, and Thunder Force III & IV.

The team began their collaboration after meeting on the system11 forums and has since dedicated several years to meticulously crafting the game for Sega's iconic 16-bit platform. A standout aspect of ZPF’s development is its use of Stéphane Dalongeville's SGDK (Sega Genesis Development Kit), enhanced by custom C code specially written by the ZPF Team to maximize the kit’s capabilities and optimize performance on the original hardware. Jack Yarwood, reporting on the launch, noted that Mega Cat Studios is offering several purchasing options for prospective buyers.

Gamers can pre-order ZPF as a standalone cartridge for $50, opt for a complete-in-box edition at $60, or secure a premium limited edition package for $150.

Beyond the game itself, an array of exclusive collectibles is available through BackerKit, including an art book, a diorama, postcards, stickers, and the official soundtrack in both vinyl and CD formats. ZPF is currently scheduled for a Q1 2025 release, with pre-orders managed directly through the BackerKit platform.

This initiative follows Mega Cat Studios' ongoing commitment to supporting original titles on retro hardware, enhancing the legacy of the Sega Genesis with innovative and enthusiast-driven projects. For retro gaming fans and collectors, ZPF's launch marks a significant milestone, reflecting a blend of classic inspiration and new development made possible by dedicated indie teams.

As anticipation builds toward the upcoming release, Mega Cat Studios and ZPF Team are poised to deliver a memorable addition to the beloved shoot 'em up genre.
