Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Surpasses One Million Sales in Japan — Latest Nintendo Financial Report Insights

Koei Tecmo has officially announced that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has surpassed one million copies sold in Japan, marking a significant achievement for the action franchise.

This milestone comes shortly after the release of Nintendo's latest financial report, which provides crucial insight into the performance of top-selling titles across their hardware lineup, including the Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, developed by Koei Tecmo and published by Nintendo outside Japan, released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The title is the latest entry in the successful Zelda spin-off series, blending the signature hack-and-slash gameplay of the Warriors franchise with beloved elements from The Legend of Zelda universe.

Released in late 2025, Age of Imprisonment followed on the heels of its predecessor, which sold over three million copies during its launch week in 2020. In their updated statement, Koei Tecmo revealed, "As of January 2026, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has topped one million units sold in Japan." This achievement underscores the franchise’s continued popularity in the domestic market, despite a slower start overseas.

Nintendo's financial report, which covers sales figures as of December 31, 2025, did not include Age of Imprisonment among titles exceeding one million sales outside Japan, as its international sales had not crossed the milestone by that date.

Sales for the title in regions outside Japan are reported directly by Nintendo, leading to some initial confusion in tracking global performance. By contrast, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was notably absent from the best-selling games list in both its Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions.

According to Nintendo's report, neither version of the long-awaited Metroid sequel reached one million in worldwide sales by the end of 2025.

Given the launch window, this is not unexpected, as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond had just under a month to accumulate figures and its numbers were further divided between two hardware editions.

While enthusiasm for the franchise remains high, splitting the sales across versions likely contributed to the slower start seen in this period. At present, specific worldwide sales numbers for both Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond remain undisclosed.

However, the surge in Japanese sales for Koei Tecmo's title suggests momentum that could translate into stronger global performance in subsequent quarters.

Fans and analysts can expect further updates in Nintendo’s next financial disclosure, where additional Switch 2 titles that have crossed key sales thresholds will be highlighted.
