Official MGO servers were progressively shut down over the years; the MGS4-specific servers were taken offline in 2012.
Since then, SaveMGO — a community project that runs reverse-engineered servers — has worked to restore and maintain playability for those online modes.
The discovery was publicized on social media by a SaveMGO member known as Marko (also using the handle KDE Wayland 69 Enjoyer).
He said that strings referencing SaveMGO were present inside the Master Collection Volume 2 MGS4 executable and that the finding makes him proud of the preservation work the group has done.
In a follow-up video reaction, Marko described the discovery as an affirmation that the community project’s preservation efforts have had tangible results for the game’s continuity.
