Square Enix and Wizards of the Coast have unveiled fresh glimpses of the anticipated Magic: The Gathering — Final Fantasy set, reigniting excitement among both Magic and Final Fantasy communities.
The latest reveal, shared over the weekend, spotlights some of the franchise’s most celebrated characters—including Tifa, Aerith, Cloud, Lightning, Yuna, Clive, and Chocobo—alongside a striking new card depiction of Final Fantasy VII’s central antagonist, Sephiroth.
The innovative artwork for Sephiroth, presented as part of the Magic: The Gathering — Final Fantasy crossover, features a reimagined illustration capturing the character’s iconic transformation into "Safer-Sephiroth"—his final form during the climatic battle of Final Fantasy VII.
Longtime fans will recall this stage of the game, where Sephiroth becomes the formidable "One-Winged Angel," a hallmark moment that has resonated through the series’ history.
However, the visual style on the new Magic: The Gathering card notably diverges from his original design in the 1997 RPG, offering a fresh take that differs from previous entries, including the popular Remake trilogy.
Released officially on June 13, 2025, this collaboration brings together two titans of the gaming world: Square Enix, creators of the Final Fantasy series with over 173 million units sold as of 2024, and Wizards of the Coast, known for Magic: The Gathering’s decades-long legacy on tabletop and MTG Arena platforms.
The partnership marks the latest in a series of cross-media expansions supporting robust engagement through gaming events and the Nintendo Switch eShop, where related digital releases continue to thrive.
Tetsuya Nomura, renowned for his work as the creative director on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and director of the Remake trilogy, offered further insight into his vision for the new Sephiroth card.
Speaking through official statements, Nomura explained that he intentionally created two interconnected illustrations—one for each side of the card.
“There is a reason why the Safer Sephiroth design is different from the original game," Nomura clarified, “but unfortunately, I can’t share further details about that at this time.” His comment suggests a purposeful evolution in Sephiroth’s appearance, reflecting the ongoing narrative developments in the FFVII Remake series while building anticipation for future installments.
This unique approach to character design within the Magic: The Gathering — Final Fantasy collaboration underscores the creative synergy between Square Enix and Wizards of the Coast.
Fans eagerly await the set’s official release, which promises to bring iconic Final Fantasy heroes and villains to life in the collectible card game’s format.
With new interpretations of beloved characters, this crossover sets a new benchmark for gaming collaborations and deepens the legacy of both franchises on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and beyond.
