Konami’s iconic stealth-action series, Metal Gear Solid, has remained a seminal franchise in the gaming industry since its inception in the late 1990s.
Recently, the spotlight has returned to this legendary series with the release of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.
1—now available on contemporary platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and a variety of digital storefronts such as the eShop.
However, fans have voiced one persisting concern: the continued absence of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from current-generation consoles.
In an exclusive conversation with IGN, veteran Konami producer Noriaki Okamura was asked directly about the possibility of porting Metal Gear Solid 4 to modern hardware.
Okamura acknowledged the widespread demand within the gaming community, stating that the company is well aware of the game's unavailability outside its original PlayStation 3 release.
"We're certainly conscious of the ongoing demand for Metal Gear Solid 4 to be accessible on today’s platforms," Okamura explained.
When discussing the potential content of the as-yet-unannounced Master Collection Vol.
2, he added, "While we can’t share detailed information at this point, with Master Collection Vol.
1 featuring the first three titles in the series, fans may be able to draw their own conclusions about what could be next."
Okamura further clarified Konami’s position regarding the franchise’s roadmap, explaining, "At present, we’re evaluating the future of the Metal Gear series internally.
We appreciate the enthusiasm from our community and ask for patience as we determine our next steps.
For now, we don’t have anything more to announce, but we encourage fans to stay tuned for future updates."
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was originally released in 2008 exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
Despite critical acclaim and strong sales—surpassing 6 million units worldwide—this chapter has remained confined to that single platform.
The recent arrival of other classic entries on modern hardware, notably on platforms like the Nintendo Switch via the eShop and through the Master Collection, has only intensified demand for MGS4 to follow suit.
Konami’s commitment to preserving and revitalizing the Metal Gear Solid legacy is evident in their release strategy and ongoing engagement with fans.
As anticipation grows around a potential Master Collection Vol.
2, the community eagerly awaits official confirmation of MGS4 finally making its way to current-generation consoles, including the Nintendo Switch.
For now, those intrigued by the series can revisit the earlier titles—or experience them for the first time—on Nintendo Switch and other modern hardware, with full support from Konami’s development and publishing teams.
