Kingdom Hearts 4: Disney Games Group Names Series a 'Billion-Dollar' Franchise as Switch Ports Arrive

Disney Games Group has singled out Kingdom Hearts as one of its nine "billion-dollar" franchises while confirming Square Enix is actively developing the next mainline entry, ahead of further remasters arriving on Nintendo platforms. The Kingdom Hearts franchise, which launched on PlayStation 2 in 2002, remains a central property for both Square Enix and Disney as the series enters its third decade. In an official release, Disney Games Group said the portfolio spans nine franchises that have each generated at least $1 billion in revenue. The announcement attributes significant recent growth to new titles developed over the past 12 years and highlights mobile performance: Disney & Pixar Games' mobile titles — including Disney Solitaire, Disney Tsum Tsum and Disney Magic Kingdoms — have surpassed 1 billion installs since 2014. Disney also reported that its games ecosystem has driven an estimated $3.5 billion in annual consumer spend over recent years and exceeded $4 billion in the most recent fiscal year. Disney's EVP of Global Games and Digital Entertainment, Sean Shoptaw, framed games as a core pillar of the company’s broader entertainment strategy, saying the company recognizes interactive experiences as a primary way audiences discover Disney characters and worlds. He added that Disney is committed to building original interactive experiences across its properties rather than relying solely on direct adaptations. The announcement also notes the breadth of Disney’s interactive strategy. Lucasfilm Games is developing across more than 20 genres and multiple platforms, and Disney is expanding new franchises through gaming, naming projects such as Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine as examples of that push. For Kingdom Hearts specifically, Disney and Square Enix confirmed native Nintendo Switch 2 versions of KINGDOM HEARTS - HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC) are scheduled to arrive in October, with at least some of those collections also coming to the original Nintendo Switch. The companies are presenting additional Kingdom Hearts content during Disney’s D23 events, and a "Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts" session is scheduled for 15 August 2026 to mark the series' ongoing anniversary celebrations. As Square Enix progresses work on the next mainline Kingdom Hearts title, fans can expect continued support across consoles and mobile platforms, and broader Disney Games Group investments that position games as a major discovery channel for Disney IP.
