Red Art Games has officially announced the Joe & Mac Retro Collection for the Nintendo Switch, marking a highly anticipated return of beloved 16-bit platformers to modern hardware.
Set for release in 2025, this compilation offers longtime fans and new players alike the opportunity to revisit the vibrant world of Joe & Mac and its spin-offs, complete with modern conveniences that enhance the classic experience.
The Joe & Mac Retro Collection features three iconic games originally released on the SNES in the early 1990s: Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, Congo's Caper, and Joe & Mac: Lost in the Tropics.
In a move sure to please enthusiasts of the original series, this anthology also includes the uncensored Japanese versions of each title alongside their Western counterparts.
"We wanted to give fans a faithful yet enhanced experience," a Red Art Games spokesperson stated in the official announcement.
"With the inclusion of both regional versions and new features, the Joe & Mac Retro Collection lets players enjoy these classics as never before."
Among the quality-of-life improvements added are save states, which allow players to conveniently save progress at any point, and a rewind function for revisiting challenging sections.
The collection introduces an optional CRT filter to authentically replicate the look and feel of classic tube televisions, and offers customizable aspect ratios to suit player preferences.
Additionally, local co-op is available for Joe & Mac 1 and 2, preserving the series' iconic multiplayer gameplay.
Each title celebrates the diversity and creativity of the franchise:
- Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, a run-and-gun platformer, follows the cavemen heroes through 12 demanding levels armed with imaginative prehistoric weaponry.
Notably, while the Western release was originally censored, the collection ensures that fans can now experience the Japanese version in its full, uncensored form.
- Congo's Caper features a side-scrolling action adventure centered on Congo, a half-human, half-monkey protagonist, as he embarks on a quest across 35 varied levels to rescue his girlfriend from a menacing demon.
- Joe & Mac: Lost in the Tropics enhances the formula with light RPG elements, allowing players to not only confront Stone Age adversaries but also pursue relationships and family life within the game.
To further excite dedicated collectors, Red Art Games confirmed a Kickstarter campaign in conjunction with the announcement.
Supporters at selected tiers will have the opportunity to secure exclusive physical editions of the compilation, as well as a range of collectible digital and physical rewards.
The Joe & Mac Retro Collection for Nintendo Switch represents a significant effort to preserve and reintroduce iconic SNES-era titles with modern enhancements.
Fans can look forward to its launch in 2025 and can stay updated via the Nintendo Switch eShop and future Nintendo Direct presentations.
