Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates Weekly Japanese Hardware Sales Charts as Mario Kart World Continues Strong Performance
The latest Japanese boxed game and hardware sales data, published by Famitsu, showcase a dynamic week for Nintendo, SEGAFamitsu, and other major gaming brands.
The week spanning September 22 to September 28 features notable debuts in both software and hardware, underscoring Nintendo’s persistent success within Japan’s competitive gaming landscape.
Software: New Releases and Perennial Favorites
The PlayStation 5 title Silent Hill f debuted in first place, achieving impressive week-one sales of 57,475 units.
Close behind sits Nintendo’s Mario Kart World for the Switch 2, adding another 35,027 copies sold, bringing its cumulative total to a robust 1,801,323 units.
This result further cements the Mario Kart franchise as a cornerstone of Nintendo’s game portfolio.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Sega’s latest entry into its flagship racing series, arrived at number nine in the software charts.
The Switch version managed to sell 5,571 units in its opening week.
Industry analysts note that while Sonic’s brand enjoys significant popularity in Western territories, its resonance is comparatively lower among Japanese players.
Additionally, the anticipation for the Switch 2 version later in the year may have led some consumers to hold off on purchasing this launch edition.
Role-playing fans saw the arrival of Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian on both Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.
The Switch edition outperformed its PS5 counterpart, with launch week sales of 10,425 units versus 9,802 units for PS5.
Speaking on the game’s reception, a spokesperson for Gust (the developer) highlighted that “positive early reception from Japanese Switch users reflects the strong connection between the Atelier franchise and the Nintendo platform.”
Other key entries in the top ten included the sequel to 9 R.I.P., debuting at number five with 10,037 Switch units sold, EA Sports FC 26 across both PS5 (11,327 units, third place) and Switch (6,529 units, eighth), and Minecraft, which continues its steady performance with 5,061 Switch copies sold, boosting its lifetime Japanese sales to over 4 million.
Hardware: Nintendo Switch 2 Demonstrates Dominance
For hardware, Nintendo Switch 2 maintained its leadership, selling 44,150 units—making it the highest-selling console for the week.
The Switch OLED Model followed in second place, recording 14,187 units, while the traditional Switch and Switch Lite added a combined 8,923 units.
In comparison, the PlayStation 5 family accounted for a total of 16,911 units across its Standard, Digital Edition, and Pro models.
Cumulatively, Nintendo's Switch hardware lineup (Switch 2, OLED, Lite, and standard model) delivered robust sales, reflecting continued demand for the platform in Japan despite it nearing the end of its lifecycle.
Lifetime sales for the base Switch have topped 20 million, with Switch OLED Model exceeding 9.2 million units sold domestically.
Xbox Series consoles observed limited traction in the Japanese market, with the Series X, Digital Edition, and Series S combining for under 500 units during the same period.
Conclusion
These latest figures reinforce Nintendo’s enduring relevance and innovation within its home market.
As the gaming community anticipates the Switch 2's expanding library and continued software support, the charts suggest Nintendo remains at the forefront of Japan’s gaming industry, both in software engagement and hardware adoption.
For game developers and publishers, understanding these market dynamics remains crucial for future planning and localization strategies.
