Pokémon Legends: Z-A Continues Its Commanding Run on Japanese Sales Charts
Pokémon Legends: Z-A has once again claimed the top spot in Famitsu's latest weekly software and hardware sales charts, underscoring the enduring popularity of The Pokémon Company's flagship franchise in Japan.
Released across both traditional Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2 platforms, Pokémon Legends: Z-A continues its impressive retail momentum for the week of October 20th to 26th, 2025.
According to Famitsu, Pokémon Legends: Z-A sold an additional 195,849 physical copies on Nintendo Switch and 71,991 copies on Switch 2 during the tracked period.
While these numbers reflect a decrease compared to the massive figures at launch, the continued strength of physical sales—especially considering the Switch 2 bundle packaging—shows that demand remains high among Japanese players.
In total, both platforms drove a combined 267,840 units in physical sales for the week, cementing the title's position at the top of Japan's gaming landscape.
The enduring appeal of Pokémon was evident as no other title came close to matching its sales performance this week.
Mario Kart World continues its solid run, maintaining third place with 35,176 copies moved exclusively on Switch 2.
This notable performance brings Mario Kart World within striking distance of a new milestone, as the game is now less than 35,000 units shy of the two-million mark for physical copies sold in Japan since launch—a remarkable achievement for a launch title on Nintendo's latest hardware.
Other notable software launches this week include Once Upon a Katamari, which shifted 17,289 copies on Switch and an additional 4,596 units on PlayStation 5 during its debut.
Persona 3 Reload made its mark in seventh place with 6,778 copies sold on Switch 2, while Donkey Kong Bananza has, for the first time since release, dropped out of the top ten.
Hardware sales mirrored the software landscape, with the Nintendo Switch 2 maintaining a dominant lead.
The Switch 2 added 65,434 units, pushing its lifetime sales in Japan closer to the 2.5 million units threshold.
The strong attach rate of Mario Kart World on the system remains noteworthy and reinforces Nintendo's ability to sustain strong platform tie-ins with major software releases.
In terms of overall hardware rankings, the Nintendo Switch OLED Model and Switch Lite followed Switch 2, with sales of 16,545 and 6,639 units respectively.
Sony's PlayStation 5 models—comprising standard, Digital Edition, and Pro variants—combined for lower individual sales this week, with 4,040, 3,641, and 2,822 units sold respectively.
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, Series S, and their Digital Edition continued to trail in the Japanese market.
As fans look forward to the impact of new releases such as Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, the Japanese market continues to demonstrate the resilience and widespread appeal of Nintendo platforms and franchises.
With Pokémon Legends: Z-A as this week's clear leader and Switch 2 outperforming rival platforms, Nintendo reinforces its dominant position in the region's gaming charts.
