Konami's long-standing visual novel series has achieved a fresh milestone on the Nintendo Switch, as the newly released Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You Emotional captured the top spot in Japan's weekly game sales, according to the latest data from Famitsu.

Despite a quieter period in the market as anticipation builds for the rumored Switch successor, the title made a notable debut with 21,032 units sold between May 5th and May 11th, 2024. A closer analysis of the latest Japanese video game software charts reveals an overall subdued week for sales.

Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You Emotional stood out as the clear leader, while the remainder of the top 10 was dominated by perennial Switch successes such as Minecraft, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

These titles continue to demonstrate impressive staying power, yet none managed to surpass even 10,000 unit sales during the week, with Minecraft coming closest at 8,653 copies.

Super Mario Party Jamboree (8,370 units), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (6,295 units), and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (4,589 units) filled out the upper bracket, with Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate also maintaining a presence at 3,321 units.

The only PlayStation 5 title to penetrate the top 10 was Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, selling 3,254 units.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Nintendo Switch Sports rounded out the list, both still popular among Nintendo’s diverse customer base. On the hardware front, Nintendo continued its dominance of the Japanese market.

The combined family of Switch consoles (OLED, Lite, and standard) achieved a total of 29,710 unit sales for the week.

The Switch OLED led individual hardware with 19,413 units sold, followed by Switch Lite at 7,775 units.

PlayStation 5 models captured third and fourth place, with the standard PS5 selling 4,950 units and the new PS5 Pro moving 2,689 units.

Meanwhile, the classic Switch hardware posted 2,522 sales, reflecting the lifespan and resilience of the platform even in its twilight years. Other platforms saw significantly lower numbers: the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (976), Xbox Series S (411), and Xbox Series X and Series X Digital Edition (27 and 12 units, respectively) continued to trail behind, with the PlayStation 4 (31 units) surprisingly outselling all Xbox models for the week in Japan. While overall market movement remains slow—likely a result of consumers holding back in anticipation of the next Nintendo console—the Switch’s evergreen titles and hardware variety remain formidable.

Konami’s successful debut with Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You Emotional highlights Nintendo Switch's ongoing appeal as both a software and hardware powerhouse in the Japanese market.
