In a recent question-and-answer session reported by IGN, Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Hideaki Nishino outlined the company's intention to broaden how players access PlayStation content.

Nishino said SIE wants future platforms to provide a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room, a position that has renewed discussion about a potential handheld format for a next-generation PlayStation system commonly referred to as PS6.

Context and hardware history

PlayStation has historically been tied to the living-room console model.

The current generation launched with PlayStation 5 in November 2020, a home-console platform that emphasized high-performance hardware and exclusive software.

In parallel, Sony has explored non-traditional form factors and accessories: in 2023 Sony released the PlayStation Portal remote player accessory, which streams PS5 games over Wi-Fi using Remote Play technology.

Sony has also marketed gaming monitors and audio peripherals under the INZONE brand to broaden where and how players use PlayStation hardware.

What Nishino actually said

Nishino framed the shift as both technological and experiential.

In journalistic terms, he stated that PlayStation aims not merely to be an alternative to PCs but to deliver unique PlayStation value through technological advances and expanded usage styles, including environments beyond the traditional living room.

He emphasized Sony is selling peripherals such as monitors and speakers to help break the fixed perception that PlayStation equals the living room and to broaden usage scenarios.

How this fits the market

The comment aligns with Sony's recent peripheral releases and the company s investment in streaming and remote-play functionality.

It also places Sony in an ongoing, cross-platform conversation about handheld and hybrid devices led in part by Nintendo, whose Switch hybrid system launched on March 3, 2017 and remains a major force in the handheld and hybrid console market.

What is confirmed and what remains open

The only verified items at this point are Nishino s public remarks about expanding usage scenarios, the existence of the PlayStation Portal accessory, the INZONE range of monitors and audio products, and the PS5 launch timeline.

Sony has not announced official plans or specifications for a PS6 or a dedicated handheld console.

Further details will depend on future official communications from Sony and SIE.
