The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remains one of Nintendo's most influential releases since its 1998 debut on the Nintendo 64.

While the game's scope and design helped define 3D action-adventure standards, certain areas — notably Hyrule Castle Town and sections of Hyrule Market — used 2D pre-rendered backgrounds that constrained camera movement and loading behavior.

A new mod project, titled OoT unJPEG, seeks to address those limits by reconstructing the game's prerendered scenes in full 3D.

OoT unJPEG is a work-in-progress by Reonu, a Spanish 3D artist and modder who says they have spent the last year recreating Ocarina of Time's prerendered backgrounds using Blender and Fast64.

According to Reonu's announcement on BlueSky, the project aims to be playable both on original N64 hardware and as a mod for the PC port known as Zelda 64 Recompiled.

Reonu explained that the market area has been combined into a single, continuous 3D scene to remove internal load screens and make traversal seamless.

They added that achieving acceptable performance on real N64 hardware required writing custom CPU culling code, and that the N64 build includes levels of detail (LODs) for Market buildings to aid framerate and memory constraints.

Those LODs are not planned for the PC recompilation version.

On textures, Reonu acknowledged limits in their 2D texturing skills and said the mod currently uses a mix of vanilla Ocarina of Time textures, assets borrowed from other games, and photographs taken in real life.

They have requested assistance from a 2D texture artist to improve visual fidelity and explicitly stated that no generative AI (GenAI) tools were used in any part of the project.

No release timeline has been provided.

For now, OoT unJPEG joins a long tradition of Ocarina of Time fan projects and ROM hacks that expand or reinterpret Nintendo's original N64 work.

Developers and modders interested in the project can follow Reonu's updates on BlueSky and track the mod's integration with Zelda 64 Recompiled for PC testing.

As the project progresses, it will be notable for its attempt to run redesigned prerendered scenes on authentic N64 hardware while also supporting modern PC modding workflows.
