Adi Shankar, the visionary producer acclaimed for his work on Netflix's Castlevania and Devil May Cry animated series, has officially acquired the animated rights to the legendary gaming icon Duke Nukem from Gearbox Software.
Shankar, who is widely recognized for his innovative and irreverent approach to video game adaptations, expressed his ambition to deliver an animated Duke Nukem project that stays true to the essence of the character and stands apart from conventional media interpretations.
During a recent interview with Esquire, Shankar discussed his current slate of productions and his motivation behind securing the Duke Nukem animated rights.
He clarified that, while he does not possess the gaming rights, his agreement with Gearbox Software grants him full creative control over Duke Nukem's animated ventures.
“I have several video game projects in the works, including more for Devil May Cry.
Beyond that, I have acquired the animated rights for Duke Nukem from Gearbox, granting me the opportunity to shape the future of this storied character,” Shankar explained.
Addressing his approach to the Duke Nukem animated adaptation, Shankar emphasized a desire to preserve the character’s rebellious spirit and independence.
He remarked, in paraphrased form, that when Duke Nukem achieved massive popularity, various parties sought to transform him into a marketable brand, but the true core of Duke Nukem lies in his unfiltered, nonconformist persona.
“Duke Nukem isn’t meant to be a byproduct of corporate decision-making.
The moment corporations attempt to shape him, he loses the very qualities that made him iconic.
For this project, I am committed to maintaining full creative autonomy,” Shankar stated emphatically.
Shankar’s production credentials extend well beyond animation.
His portfolio includes acclaimed Hollywood films such as The Grey (2011), Killing Them Softly (2012), Lone Survivor (2013), and The Voices (2014).
Additionally, his Bootleg Universe series—featuring projects like The Punisher: Dirty Laundry (2012), Venom: Truth in Journalism (2013), and POWER/RANGERS (2015)—has garnered a dedicated following for its bold reinterpretations of established IPs.
Duke Nukem, a franchise with roots dating back to its first release in 1991, has seen considerable success on multiple gaming platforms and remains a key figure in shooter game history.
Shankar’s commitment to an authentic and unrestrained adaptation promises to energize both longtime fans and newcomers.
As developments emerge around Shankar’s Duke Nukem animated venture, the project is already generating significant anticipation from fans of Gearbox Software and video game adaptations across the entertainment industry.
